Helloooo,
Just having a good think... *ouch*
I was wondering how people tackle the issue of low BG's during/after exercise..
Do people have the normal amount of insulin to cover a meal then take a boost of glucose to stop low BG's?
Or do people reduce insulin knowing that exercise will stop BG's rising?
....
Since i've gained reasonable control i've put on a bit of weight... i was very skinny before so i'm not overweight but i'd like to tone up a bit and trim a little of my jelly belly i'm starting to develop...
so i'd like to decrease the amount of insulin i take before exercise rather than take extra to stop falling low afterwards..
....
Also whilst i'm here i have another problem slightly related...
I work office so i'm not as active at work as i am when i'm at home or out doing all sorts of things on a weekend...
I walk to my town centre (about ten mins each way) mon-fri whilst i'm at work to stretch the legs/have a break/fetch lunch.
I always test my BG's before i set off,
And i've noticed if i'm around 4-6mmol that when i return and test my BG's again i'm more often than not i'm hypo territory usually anywhere from 3.2-3.9
occasionally if i'm 7-9 then i'll happily walk there and back knowing my BG's will most likely be now in my target range and not have to take any extra correctives..
so heres the dilemma...
Is it normal to take a 20 mins walk (a very slow relaxed one) and drop like that?
or do you think my backkground insulin (lantus split 14/16 am/pm) in the morning may be too high which is pulling me down?
which leads me to my next question...
I usually always have my breakfast between 7.30-8.30 which is usually two slices of toast, 30g Carbs which i take a 3:1 ratio for so obviously 9 units (novorapid)
I test my sugar randomly sometimes around 2 hours after to see how high i spike (if i do)
and occasionally say around 10am i can have a reading of 12-19.. but this eventually always comes down into a range beteen 4-7 by dinner.
Which i would think nothing of as this is my target.. it's just the inbetween checks i've done that make me quite worried as after two hours my novorapid shouldbe nearly out my system and it looks like it's not even started to work yet?
.......
Any help/suggestions/advice would be awesome!
I'm waiting very patiently to see my DN and ask about this, but she's on her lovely holidays.. and she's the only full time/DAFNE trained nurse at my diabetes centre.
So my next line of expertise is you guys...
Jeez thats long i hope it makes some sort of sense.
thanks millions in advance
