When I was diagnosed, I was invited to a DESMOND clinic to learn how to control my diabetes.

As well as diet, the lecturers stressed that regular exercise was necessary to control blood sugar.

They said:
A) exercise would improve the effectiveness of the insulin I have:
B) it would help with weight loss:
C) it would help lower stress.

Since I am taking nothing on trust now from the medical profession, what are your comments?

What exercise do you take, and what do you find most effective? :?

i find that if i exercise my bg goes down quite a bit :D
i have had 2 opps since i was dx and both time i have been unable to exercise and both time my bg has been a bit higher :(
but i have lost 23 lb  since 7th jan and again when i have not been able to exercise due to the opps i have not lost any or much weight :(
i had both my big toe nails removed last week  and can not put any shoes on or get my feet wet so exercise is out for the next 6-8 weeks apart from walking very slow and as im only aloud to wear flip flops and its cold out there im not doing much of that i just hope i can keep the weight loss up
so try to do some exercise as it will help you

Well, that's OK then.

Since I am off work at the moment, I walk round the village once a day - takes about 3/4 of an hour. I have a twist stand and an abs wheel which I use three times a week.
I go to the gym for an hour twice a week: I do 3/4 on cardio - the gym recommends interval training for weight loss - and then throw free weights around for the rest of the time.

When I go back to work, I will walk there - it's about a mile. My job is far from sedentary, so I get plenty of exercise there.

Since we both work, having a dog is irresponsible, since it will be left at home alone all day. I could never do that to a social animal. And since Hubby ran over the cat just before Xmas, I have no furry babies at the moment.

hi whitemare,
http://www.runsweet.com
this is a fantastic site for diabetics who take exersise seriously.
there's loads of advice from diabetics who take part in sports
at the highest competitive level, including Steven Redgrave.
when you get on the website click the link "Diabetes and sport"
and scroll down the menu of sports down the left hand side
until you find something that tickles your fancy.

obviously you may not want to take it quite as far as some of the
diabetic athletes on there but it shows where you can get to
if you really want to go.

and it makes my 20 minutes a day on the treadmill look seriously lame.

all the best,
tim

Thanks, Tim, looks like a good site, I will be going back.

Keep the faith.

I am off in June for a week's walking on Dartmoor - hope it's not so soggy as last year. We fell in the West Leat and had a damp walk back!

Just been diagnosed this week, so I started by going out for a 10 minute walk to the park and back in my lunchbreak, and will build up from there. Its been a good week to start as the weather's been kind to me and I have found it good to get out of the office even for a short break!

Hi Lindy,

Welcome!
Keep up the good work.
I started small and could only do five minutes on the treadmill. Now I can do a good half hour and still be okay to throw weights around.

The 'current wisdom' from the medical profession is that you only need an extra 30 minutes of exercise a day to make a difference, so you are on your way.

Don't look back.

All the best

hi,
I use a gym nearly every day and burn off around 400/500 calories and find the reduction in my 'blood sugar' levels incredible.Do exercise if at all physically possible you will find it great benefit for confidence and/or any depression. 8)

Thanks for the welcome and words of encouragement, whitemare! I burned off loads on Saturday, mowing my lawns - might have done a whole weeks worth of exercise in one day!! Yesterday it rained, so - as no-one was around I danced to a couple of Scouting For Girls tracks. "She's So Lovely" I was definitely not. Still, it was good and lifted the depression on a dismal day!

i agree with lindy-lou,mowing the lawn has good effects on my bs's too.i am a very active person anyway and always on the go but i do get on my treadmill that my hubby bought me as a xmas gift(he thought it was better fort me than running around the streets as i was doing)i run a quick mile everyday and that seems perfect for me
