Exercise

Can I ask a question please. On this forum there seems to be an assumption that we need to exercise every day and for a certain amount of time. My sugars are under control 4s to low 8s at the very highest. Very rarely do I get a high reading. I eat to my meter and although I do not check every day I know what I can eat. I am a stock size 14 and am not fat. I do not exercise although I am relatively active, do housework and do not drive so do walk probably a bit more than a car driver would, but not to the extent of actually walking to exercise. my question is what extra beneficial effect would exercise have. Say I went on an exercise bike for 10 minutes each morning what effects would that have. Do I need to consider doing any even though I do not need it to to help my readings or my weight. Yes I realise that the effect on the heart is good , I can't say it appeals to me anyway but I am interested to know why you all think it is a necessity for us all.

Exercise increases insulin sensitivity which is obviously relevant to T2 diabetics in general; presumably that is what you observed on this site.

The NHS lists the following benefits of exercise.
Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
[...]
up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke
up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes
up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer
up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer
a 30% lower risk of early death
up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis
up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture
a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults)
up to a 30% lower risk of depression
up to a 30% lower risk of dementia

So whilst I would not neccessarily expect an improvement in BG or weight, I think exercising might be a good idea overall but that might not be enough if you don't care about your heart.

For me exercise is about bone strength and mobility. I watched my grandmother slowly give up on any form of exercise and she was virtually house/wheelchair bound for 10 years before she died of diabetes complications. But she didn't really have a particular issue its just that she gave up and didn't use her mobility so she lost it. My mum has knee problems and I worry about her mobility as she gets older, I want to do everything I can to be mobile and active into my dotage!

My step grandmother had bone density issues, when she died late last year her spine was completely curved and she could barely lift her head. While I can do all that I do, then I am going to, and it makes me feel GRREEAT!!
