Expensive mistake

My attempt to guarantee safe eating came unstuck yesterday when Mrs DeeJay and I treated ourselves to dinner at a country house hotel. I sent my food list in advance and the owner assured me the delicious choices on the menu were interchangeable.

I chose the ones that looked the least carb-fuelled. (monkfish starter, bass main). But each tempting course proved to be a single sculpture of artistically-arranged ingredients impossible to disentangle or substitute for anything else. Then there was the unexpected pre-starter starter of curried parsnip puree (veloute?), and between the courses palate-fresheners of lemon mousse and a sorbet. And the pud the chef had made specially for me comprised fresh berries but with chocolate-topped sponge and sweet lemon cream. I felt it would be rude to go for the cheeseboard instead.

Luckily the portions were as small as the prices were large and by the time I got to swipe the Libre reader over the sensor two hours after first bite my BS had peaked at somewhere between 9 & 10 and was descending steeply through 7.

No harm done, but I wasn't in control. However, considering Mrs DeeJay managed to spend more than £18 on one large gin and tonic at the bar, we won't be going back for a year or so.

Transport cafes are really the safest for us, I think.

I remember going to a funeral, the wake was held in a very expensive hotel. My friend went to the bar when he returned he said will this glass fit in your handbag when I asked why he said at £12 I obviously bought the glass.
We were also served "green" green what I hear you ask, no idea, the servers had no idea either it was just green. May have been peas mashed into avocado then shaped into balls. It was tasteless.

I don't know how these posh places have the nerve to charge such over inflated prices, and also muck about so much with the food, plus small portions to boot. Greasy spoon for me any day. We have a lot of Michelin star restaurants and their ilk round here. We just won't go.

I recall my husband having a disagreement in a plush hotel when they tried to argue his vodka and tomato juice was £5 dearer because it was a cocktail. No it isn't .....yes it is says barman - it's a bloody Mary. This continued for a while until hubby questioned the difference between a bloody Mary and a vodka and tomato juice. Turned out it was a celery stick and a dash of Lea & Perrins. But I don't like celery said hubby....doesn't matter it is still a cocktail you put Lea & Perrins in it. More like bloody liberty not bloody Mary. Next round he asked for a straight vodka on ice and a tomato juice in a separate glass with a touch of L&P. Guess what ? It was £5 cheaper - we never went back.
