Hi..
Does anyone on here succesfully use square or dual rate boluses?

I usually eat quite low carb, about 35g at lunch & dinner time. I know this may not be low for some people but those levels work for me.

However sometimes especially at this time of year I have occasions (xmas parties, dinners and so on) where I want to eat more.

I have tried using both types of extended bolus for these times but cannot make it work. My blood sugar usually stays ok during the duration of the bolus and directly after but then rises sharply by morning . I have tried making the extended part longer but without success.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Hi cally,

Do you think it would be possible to do a second basal rate? Is it possible to programme that with your pump?

I use a accuchek combo and on this i can programme several basal rates and use a multi-wave bolus - where it will give a certain amount when i need it and the rest over the course of an hour (i use this when i have a takeaway). I know that both of these work for me.

With a second basal rate you change the hours that you need to so if you know that you will be slighly higher in the morning then you could change the basal rate to take it into account.

Hope this makes sense! Enjoy your parties

Hello Jo,

Thank you for your suggestion. It had been suggested to me that I could put on a temporary basal but I couldn't figure out how I was going to do that in the middle of the night which is about when extended bolus runs out.

However a different basal pattern might work. I already have a different pattern for work so I will have to try that.

Thanks very much.. I will let you know how I get on

how about use a temporary increase to basal of say 25% (mine stays at 25% til I turn the temp to normal) and still use the extended (which you should only really use up to 4 hours)?
