Hi, i was wondering if anyone could help. My 5 year old son was diagnosed type 1 at the beginning of feb. Since then he has been so hungry it gets him upset. His diabetes was caught extremely early he had no ketones as his dad is also type 1 and we noticed his thirst and toilet trips and checked him right away. Now i know that for the first month or two this hunger thing is common..but we are nearly 4month on now and its getting worse not better. He has no ketones his blood sugars have off days but on a whole isnt to bad. Hba1c of 58 last checked (was only 61 on diagnosis) but he eats more than me!! At first i thought he was like this because he knew he couldnt eat all day long so wanted to. But the teachers at school have mentioned by 2pm he is asking for food and getting upset about it. Iv mentioned it a few times to the nurse who said to just feed him but where do i stop? He can have a decent bowl of cereal at 7.30am and by 9am ask where dinner is and how long its going to be. It just doesnt seem right.

Is his sugar level alright between meals? Maybe it drops too much and thats why he feels hunger?

We are dealing with trying to control spikes inbetween meals at the moment (more so between breakfast and dinner) but other than that no. He does hypo dont get me wrong, but not everyday and not inbetween meals without me noticing. He does sometimes say he is hungry when hes low but usually its saying he is tired that prompts us he may be low. But i always check. Its constant all day every day. It doesnt seem right.

Sorry I cant advice. Im sure there will be some parents to advice. Some children eat a lot. Years ago I worked as a nanny and looked after little boy who used to eat all the time. We had lunches of the same quantity and he was 4 at the time!

He was never like this before though i hope someone has had a similar experience and can shed some light

Carbs make you hungry, maybe try some higher protein foods so you can eat more for the same carbs.

Growing up kids tends to eat more often, they should meet their RDA for them to reach their maximum growth. Did you try to ask information with his nutritionist regarding his hunger? Have a 2 boy nephews age 7 and 4 and they eat and drink milk like there is no tomorrow. Especially when they are very active the whole day, their mom must have sandwiches, fruits and milk ready anytime. They would ask food like every hour or two.

Sorry to hear your son gets so upset. My 18 month old son was diagnosed with type 1 October last year and the specialist told me he would probably want to eat a lot more for a while. He has only recently in the last couple of months returned to what I consider normal amounts of food, but if his BG goes below 5 he gets extremely hungry. May I recommend talking to the paediatric diabetes specialist dietitian if you have not already spoken to them. Good luck.

I have spoken to everyone within his team and none seem concerned. To me i just think he shouldnt be eating more food than me? They said he has no weight problem and is a perfect weight for his height and if he is hungry, just to feed him. Hopefully it doesnt last to much longer

Hi Nicola we were also told at diagnose that we would see an increase in appetite our team said that insulin makes your body feel hungrier. I have 2 boys and even the older one us is not diabetic is constantly hungry maybe it's just a boy thing
