Eye Problem - what is it?

There wont be anybody in here that could diagnose your condition so I recommend you go back and ask for a more technical description other than 'a swelling/lump' in the middle.
Its a good job I wasn't receiving a diagnosis that way or he would have felt my displeasure in no uncertain terms :evil:

On the positive side though, it probably is not anything dire or he would said something a little more alarming.

Yeah, bloomin docs! I've met more than my share who seem to think they know best and I should be thoroughly grateful I have been seen by them.
At least in relative terms three months will pass all too quickly and you'll be back in with him for round two.

Sounds like you might have CSMO (Clinically Significant Macula Oedema). The swelling (oedema) is due to fluid which has leaked out of the small capillaries. These lie in the part of the retina where light falls when you look at things in detail. Keeping good glucose control, lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol and LDL and stopping smoking (if applicable) are the best ways of helping yourself. Oh, and make sure you attend your 3-month appointment.

I have had a detched retina in the past. Previous to my diabetes diagnosis.
I was sent to a local hospital where there was an eye casualty dept.
Considering that most ppl would consider eye sight to be a major priority, and that your GP was as much use as a nun on a motorbike, I would feel justified in going to a local EYE CASUALTY. Ring your local big hospital for your area.
They are excellent, although only operate 9-5 in most areas. Or, find out who the local opthalmologist is, who offers diabetics their yearly screening. This is different from your ordinary local optician. GOOD LUCK. xx
remember, it is your SIGHT, not theirs. would your GP be happy with his own diagnosis, for his OWN eyes, if the situation was reversed?

It could be due to a fat leakage . I don't know if your spot has gone since you posted but another visit is a good idea if it's grown.

I have macular edema, when I look through my left eye straight lines appear to be curvy. I have been to the eye hospital where I had a test to confirm it. They injected dye into my arm and then looked at my eyes through a speacial machine. It was really interesting as they could see exactly what was going on in my eyes. I went back for the results and the specialist said they could laser it but he would prefer to leave well alone as it hadn't got any worse.

I would definitely go back and ask for more details.
