hi all am new here
and i must say what i have read so far is vey helpfull and have learned a lot.
i have a question i would lie a bit of help with if poss..
i have a blurry vision prob moslty in one eye, my BS are ok under 7 in the morning and mostly under 10 during the day...i have had my eyes tested by the specialist who says that they i have no reitnopathy that needs laser treatment and "it should settledown as he said it is due to the insulin i only started in november 08....but 8months later it is still the same it only started when my insulin got to about 38 units taken at 7pm every evening i am now on 48 units, increased by 2 from yesterday 4th july 09.
only to find my other eye was a bit blurry this morning. i am wondering if it is the insulin (lantus) that is causing it i have heard and read that is has problems...i also take metformin, glimipride and ramipril..
am very concerened about this as i not want to be able to drive and se in general....
hope you al can shed some light on this please ..

since i last posted this thread i stopped using lantus and insuin altogether, and i have to
report that my eyesight in my left eye has gone back to where i was before i started taking
insulin, and also i am not having depressive moods, moods swings i have more energy less aches and pains....and my blood sugars havent been over 10.3 in the 3 weeks that i have not been taking insulin...
so i think my concerns where justifyed..regarding insulin effecting my sight..
 
No idea why no one replied to your OP but I'm glad you are finding your eyesight better now. I can't comment on insulin as I am only recently diagnosed myself and don't use it, but thought I'd say hi and acknowledge you post! Good luck.
 
Hi strabo.

Sorry you were missed. It does sometimes happen.

High Bg levels can certainly cause blurry vision. Now you have stopped the Insulin and are just on oral meds see what happens.

As a T2 your Bg levels need to be in accordance with the 2009 guideline figures as follows:
Fasting (waking).............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you can achieve lower post prandial numbers then so much the better.
 
I was diagnosed type 2 about 16 days ago and I have no idea what my sugars are as I dont have a meter. I have to see diabetic nurse on tuesday so will ask about one. In the last ten days my eyesight has dramatically deteriorated from being able to see perfectley to everything being really blurry and I cant read. So in a panic off I went to opticians to be told I am going to have to wear glasses permanently, varifocals. I am devastated, I know its not the end of the world but it just seems to be one thing on top of another, what do I have to look forward to next ha ha. At the moment using big magnifying glass to read and type, feel like sherlock holmes. Im hoping if I get sugars sorted out maybe I wont have to wear the glasses all the time. Heres hoping.

Just in case your optician didn't tell you: a word of warning before you spend a lot of money on prescription glasses - your vision is likely to alter (and fluctuate) as you get your blood glucose levels under control so the specs that seem right for you when you have your eyes tested may be completely wrong a few days later.

You might find the reading glasses available in many supermarkets and chemists would tide you over the transition period. You might need several different-strength pairs but they are fairly cheap (compared to prescription spectacles).

Thanks MaryChristine too late though glasses are ordered, all the optician told me was that it could become a costly business as eyesight could change each visit which would mean different glasses each time. I did explain to them that I was newly diagnosed diabetic and my eyesight had just all of a sudden deteriorated but she just did the tests and said I needed the glasses now before my eyes got worse. Suppose its their way of making money. Got to admit I was surprised that she didnt put it down to the changes in my sugar levels and maybe say just to keep a close eye on it. No pun intended lol. But I will live and learn.

Hi weim1.

Mary Christine gave you good advice. If your Optician sold you the glasses knowing full well that you were a newly dignosed Diabetic AND that your Bg levels were not controlled you could possibly have case for getting your money back. They are 'not fit for the purpose ?' You could need another prescription next month !! You should have been advised to come back once your Bg levels had settled. A reputable Optician would have told you that.

Hope your new specs turn out to be ok.

If you do need different ones after a short time, you may be able to have new lenses put into the same frames, which will cut the cost a bit.

And varifocals are SO expensive - I just forked out £250 on new lenses, certainly hoping my eyesight doesn't fluctuate too much now. However my optician offers a 30 day money back guarantee, so if I don't get on with the varifocals I haven't wasted the cash. Eyes can definitely take a while to settle down after normalising blood sugar levels, I think your optician has given you poor advice about getting specs now Donna - particularly with this type of lens - instead of waiting?
