Facebook or not?

i was wondering if I could have some advice here. I would quite like a Facebook account as many of the clubs my daughters belong to and their school give out info through face book. However my work regularly check people's social media and the students bombard people with requests for friends. Even ex students but this isn't ok either as they sometimes have siblings or friends who have siblings still at school so I thought about opening an account with a user name to keep my private life just that. Private. I resent anyone checking up on me and my hubbies work do the same. He has seen people dragged into the office for some innocent remark made on Facebook. Is it possible therefore to create an account and how do I do it?
 
I don't use my real name but it stops people I would like to hear from contacting me unless I have given them my username so I feel a bit lonely on there. You can use any name you want.
 
In the privacy settings, you can have an account where only you can add people I think. Other than that there is lots of privacy settings to allow you to remain hidden. Also, alarming as it seems, you can open a Facebook in any name you like.
 
@Scandichic you have to be picky about who you choose to be friends with. I only have 58 friends on Facebook and these people are people I know well. You can control who sees your posts, the best setting is Friends only and don't tag people in posts as their friends can see it too.
 
Do you do it under your real name or do you have a username?
 
At the end of the day Facebook will be a very handy tool in your line of work. Just use your common sense in the way you join. We use various Facebook accounts. If your not happy with one just cancel, have a rethink and start a new one.
 
Ive used my real name, I've only got a few friends and my kids. Its a free way of letting me know they are ok when they are away. I've never had a problem, but then I don't just 'friend' anybody. I have to know them personally.
 
I have a facebook page and I hate it ...
 
I use my real name. I do have another account which I only use rarely for things that I don't want associated with my real account

It never occurred to me that you can have more than one account!
 
I am on fb with my real name but have all the rest strictly private as I work in a school so kids can't check up on me what I am doing or stuff. You can set it in your privacy setting how much public can see and friends etc
 
Thanks for all your advice! I may start up one for the family so I can get all the info I need.

this was my issue. I'm quite a sociable person and do stop and chat to kids and parents when I encounter them in town or the supermarket but I don't like this idea that my life becomes public property. Nor do I want my hubbie dragged into the office because he has passed some statement like work was bliss today because there were not as many kids in as normal. Apparently this is bad for business. This actually happened to one of his colleagues.
 
Scandi I used Facebook briefly. I had just 4 friends and then became aware that one of those was using it to tell me of things he had been invited to which I hadn't and to 'pass' messages to me from a 3rd party. So I left. Can't stand it. I email people I want to keep in touch with and ignore the rest.
 

I'm the same. I don't have a problem having a chat with kids and parents in ALDI or wherever I meet them in town but fb is obviously different. You cana go into "Privacy Shortcuts" on the top and then 4th topic down it says "What do other people see on my Timeline?" and you can see it as the public (=not your friend) or you can check what specific people can see or friends. It's useful. In my case (as far as I am aware or at least last time I checked) the public could see my name and my cover and profile photos. That's it. No friends, none of my wall, no private info as in birthday or where I live. You can try it out and see what works for you. I love fb as it enables me to stay in touch with friends all over the UK and my family in Germany.
 
If you have two email addresses then you can have two Facebook accounts. If you don't it is easy to set up another just for this
 
i like Facebook, although i never talk on it, i have befriended lots of people from school and distant relies who i have no wish to talk to, but the news feed shows lots of funny videos i enjoy watching
 
Facebook's privacy settings are surprisingly watertight. You can set everything to 'friends only' to prevent being snooped on by anyone.

You can even double check your privacy options by clicking view as... here:



This lets you view your own profile as a member of the public, just allowing you to double check what they can see. It gives you the opportunity to go through and hide anything you wouldn't want the public viewing
