Fake hypo - why?

Just wondering if anyone can give any insight into the following? Haven't eaten a huge amount today but for lunch I had a tuna mayo subway (smaller one) at about 1 o'clock. (My first for years). Half 5 I suddenly felt heart racing, lightheaded, panicky. Checked my levels and I was 6.4. I do tend to get false hypos at around 5 and a long time ago before sorting out my diet and starting Metformin I used to get really shaky at 8! But normally at 6.4 I wouldn't feel like this. Is this just one of those weird things with no explanation or something I'm overlooking? Any ideas? TFR x

The level you experience "fake hypos" is entirely down to what levels your body is used to.
Is it possible that your BGs have been creeping up recently so 6.4 seems low?

Alternatively, it could be nothing to do with diabetes.
I understand anxiety/panic attacks can feel like a hypo sometimes and there may be other things to.

Apart from that, it could be a "weird one": your body reminding you who is in charge.

It could also be you were much higher and dropped fairly quickly - in the early days when I thought I could "get away with things" this would be how I would experience it

Lovinglife, do you mean a rapid fall in blood sugar would make you feel shaky etc? Can certain foods cause peaks and then a rapid drop? The reason I ask is that when I felt shaky I had a couple of mouthfuls of coke, whilst waiting for my dinner to finish cooking. I checked my levels and they'd gone up to 8.5. Had my dinner and I feel hypo sensations again, bloods have gone rapidly down to 6.6 - I don't understand what's happening.

Helensaramay, I do suffer panic attacks and they do feel the same. I am preparing to move house very soon, and move a long distance, so my stress levels are raised, but I haven't had a panic attack for quite a while, plus I take medication for them so I'm certain it wasn't this (annoying the hypo feelings do make me panic though ). My diet hasn't been as good as it could recently (running down freezer, more carbs than normal!) so maybe my bloods have been higher than I was aware?

Bread can make BG peak and then drop very quickly.

What did you have for dinner?

Give up all bread, potatoes, rice, etc and I expect your body will be a lot happier.

Yes basically before I started low carbing and my bg would drop from to high to under 6/7 fast it would make me feel like I was having a hypo - nowadays I never experience it as I like to keep my numbers between 4 and 7 at all times - although I do have small hypos now and again (under 3.5) as I'm on gliclizide -

What is the real benefit of taking gliclizide if you are able to control your levels that well, maybe ask your doctor if you can reduce or stop it as soon as you see your next hba1c.

Been there done that - believe me I tried extremely hard to drop the very last bit but even on extreme low carb my numbers started to rise so a bit of trial and error I have balanced as low gliclizide as poss with as low carb as poss to keep my numbers where I want them - some of us are further down the line than others - I personally think I've achieved quite a lot (see my sig)

Sorry @ringi just seen my sig and it's not there lol - I started off on all max meds and have reduced them down over my first 2 years - been on same meds for last 5 years so no deterioration in condition:)
