Hi All

Wow what can I say, I only joined the forum last night and I have had a result already.

I have been struggling to get my sugar down for months and I decided to try the low carb approach after reading about it here last night.

I have gone on low carbs today and with an hours excercise my sugar has hit its lowest level for months which is brilliant.

Now I am going to carry on and see what happens over the following days etc

I know it will depend but can anybody give me a figure for a good level of daily carbs just as a starting point that will keep my sugar controlled until I get to grips witgh what will be a lifestyle change for me.

Cheers

Tony

Well done 8) :D I was amazed at how quickly the levels fell when I cut the carbs.

However, expect the unexpected, your body may well rebel as it isn't being fed the carbs it is used to. You may experience a whole range of stuff that takes your blood sugar readings up, including liver dumps, the effect of exercise when you have readings at differnt levels etc etc And what happens if you are unwell. Add to this that we are all differnt and what works for one o fus might not work for another.

If you are not keeping a food diary, keep one, at least for a week or so because it helps you to make connections between what you have eaten and the readings you get. You might also want to test at differnt times - for example, my highest readings are usually 1 hour after I eat.

Have a peek in the low carb forum - lots of good advice there. I would suggest you give yourself a chance to get used to not having high carb foods for a week or so. I think making too many changes at once is difficult to maintain. I think several stepwise changes helps you to build confidence in what you are doing and see where you geet your success. This is what I did and over the last couple of weeks I have started weighing things and reducing my overall carb intake further.

Keep coming back and asking questions! Brilliant start!

Awww well done Tony! It is so encouraging when you see results isnt it?
Unfortunately I cannot give you an idea of how many carbs you can have in a day, it depends on how your body is coping with carbs, some can take more others have to go really low.
Do you test your bg, because this way you will find out how many carbs you can take. The important thing is that you keep your bg steady and if possible at non-diabetic level or at least very close to that and its not easy to do this when you first start out until you are used to counting carbs and used to reduced carbs.

Here is a rough guide though so play around with these figures and do your bg testing before and after food and keep a food diary to find out which foods give you spikes, then you will know which food you should cut down on or even cut out altogether, even if it is just for a while and you may be able to reintroduce them again at a later stage.

Low carb (ketogenic) 0-50g
Typical low carb 50-90g
Liberal low carb 90-130g
Moderate carbs 130-170g
High carb 170g plus a day

All the best

Nice one, Tony! :D
Take the changes at whatever pace suits you, just keep an eye on your meter and your meds.
There is no minimum level for carbs, so simply find a menu that you enjoy, then enjoy the meter readings!

All the best,

fergus
