Fast Heart Rate in the Morning?

Hi Guys,

I've been experiencing the symptoms of Diabetes on and off for the past couple of months to varying degrees. I did a blood test a month ago which came back "satisfactory" but since then I've developed the thirst & tiredness to a greater degree, so I am getting an Hb1Ac blood test tomorrow.

Anyway, 3-4 times over the past month, I have woken up with an unusually high heart rate in the morning which takes a few hours to come down. To give you some idea... on numerous occasions recently, I've had a RHR as low as 55 throughout the day but this morning my RHR was 75-80+ I briefly mentioned it to my Doctor but he gave me the "your heart rate varies throughout the day" spiel.

For a variety of reasons I think this Doctor is borderline incompetent, so I thought I'd see what you guys thought.

It also happened at New Years Eve... I was feeling pretty tired so went for a kip until 11:45 & I woke up with my heart rate racing, feeling off & numb fingers too. That might just have been because an alarm at a time my body wasn't expecting though; similar mechanism possibly though.

I read that it has something to do with the release of stress hormones which raise your heart rate. I can certainly attest that I feel stressed when it happens - a feeling I'm used to from Uni Exams!!

Has anyone else experienced this with undiagnosed or diet-controlled Pre-Diabetes?

I don't know If it makes a difference but I take 150mg of chelated Magnesium before bed at the moment. The first time I noticed it however, I wasn't using the Magnesium.

Thanks Guys!

When I was concerned about the fact that when I am in the doctors surgery my blood pressure was 148 over 80 which I thought was far higher than the last time and someone on here suggested that it was 'white collar syndrome' meaning that was was anxious which I was.

I bought this blood monitor.

My reading was 125 over 80 and goes as low as 100 which I am happy with,

The good thing about this one is you get a cuff with it. You just measure your upper arm and select small, medium or large. If you look on Amazon there are a lot of monitors where you have to pay an extra £10 for a cuff. The cheapest I found was £50.

I was expecting something tacky and plasticky but I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and it was a solid machine and I haven't one complaint.

I looked it up on the Which website and it scored high on accuracy and was 2nd on the list. The first costing £70 odd.

I know this doesn't answer your question but buying a blood pressure monitor could be high on your wishlist and this one does the job. It even remembers your readings so you can look back over ( I think) 300 readings.

I don't think your heart rate is anything to worry about. The only way you will find out if it is related to your diabetes is to take a blood glucose reading when you wake.
It could be that you are anxious, have been having vivid dreams or have been awakened suddenly.

Stress or lack of sleep can cause a higher than average resting heart rate, and worrying about it is likely to make it even worse. But 70-80 is really not that high and if your blood pressure is Ok then little to worry about I think.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I know that 60-90 is normal but I just thought considering my RHR is normally 55-60... it was a big leap for it to be up at 80. It's more the fact that 80 isn't normal for me; sure it's within acceptable ranges but I'm usually much lower. I have no idea if that comes in to consideration.

I'm sure thinking about it does compound the situation! I usually just chill on the sofa for a bit & then when it's lower, go for walk which gets rid of any stressy feeling.

It could be something to do with poor sleep. I always wake up at 2-3am for a pee & then I wake up once an hour until I get up at 8am. Sometimes I fall back asleep easily & other days I might be awake from 3-4am before I drift off & wake up again. Often I feel hungry when I wake up around 4-5am which doesn't help.

I think being in my Parent's house where I have to go downstairs & turn on the bathroom light wakes me up. We were away over Christmas & I only had to pop next door to go to the bathroom in the dark. I slept much better. I'm back in my flat now which might help.

As for dehydration, I've considered that might play a part... it happened once after lunch but seemed to calm down after I drank a decaf tea. As it is I'm drinking 2-3+ litres a day & pissing a lot of it out. When my symptoms get bad, I usually get cracked lips & pink eyes no matter how much I drink for an hour or two but I don't usually have a fast heart rate then... or not that I notice.

I tend not use much salt... I put some in my Porridge in the morning & other than that, I get the rest from food. I've probably been getting more salt over the past 3 weeks as my Parent's use it in their cooking. I'd say I have a low-medium intake of Sodium on the whole.

As for Potassium, I'd imagine so... I eat a balanced diet.
