not nice stuff
Hi. Been type 1 for about 18months. I moved gp 6 months ago. They sent me a letter and have asked me to do a fasting blood glucose test. I didn't thnk type 1s needed to do this or am I wrong?. When I first registered the nurse was very nice and did say they dealt with mainly type 2 and only had a couple of type 1s. Should I do this or not? I see a diabetic nurse regularly so not sure whether seeing another will be of any help. Thanks

It will be to check your cholesterol levels, you need to fast for this if they are requesting a full lipid breakdown.

You don't need to fast for this there is a calculation they can use work out the ratios.

I have a Lipids test scheduled for September and I haven't been asked to fast...........

Asked about this last year after my practise nurse said you didn't need to fast, my consultant says you do need to fast for a a full lipid breakdown so I continue to do so, whether that advice has since changed I can't be sure.

thanks for the replies thought id ask, Hope I can get a very early appointment as my blood levels rise drastically after I wake up

My GP, diabetic nurse and Consultant all have told me type 1s are no longer asked to fast for a blood glucose test. I would check with them again. Sue xxxx

I always fast for my cholesterol/lipids tests, even though I'm told it isn't necessary. The triglycerides in particular can be raised after eating. My nurse agreed with me on this and said she always fasts for hers.
