I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but have been taking my blood sugar levels first thing in the morning for a month now. They range from 6.9 (lowest) to 8.5 (highest). Do you think I should see a doctor about this or is this ok? I already have hypertension which is controlled by 4 tablets a day and I also suffer from PCOS. I'm 43.

Phew. Thanks. That's good news. My dad has type 2 so I'm on the radar! Will keep a general eye on it!

Hi. It's better to take readings 2 hours after a meal and you need to stay below around 8.5. Morning readings can be affected by overnight liver dumps of glucose so are not too reliable.

I agree with Diabell. Fasting readings are also affected by release of cortisol and other hormones (hormones that wake the body up) in the mornings.
Testing 2 hours post meal is best and should be under 8.5 - idealy 7 or so.
