As
@Boo1979 mentions there are some things which can reduce your fasting BG.
Alcohol and exercise are the main two. The reason for this is related to your glucose reserves in your liver.
When it comes to alcohol, your liver is trying to do two things - flush out the toxins (alcohol) and drip glucose. A liver is a stereotypical male - it can only do one thing at a time. So it sorts out the poisons first which means it will not be dripping glucose so your BG will be lower.
When it comes to exercise, your body needs more glucose to exercise (which is why exercise often reduces BG). If you do not have enough glucose in your blood, your liver will release extra glucose during exercise. As a result, you have less glucose in your liver to drip over the next 24 to 48 hours. Hence, lower BG for the next day or so.
Alternatively, the 5.4 could just be a rogue measurement.
(Although, if I was in your shoes, I would have seen it as a positive and not retested - it keeps the average up
)
