Fasting test results - advice needed

Hi

I've done a morning fasting test today as I'm having problems with mid morning highs. Normally my blood sugar levels are between 4 and 8 on waking but mid mornings are rising to 14 - 20. I've checked my carb ratio and have been ultra careful with my breakfasts but still the same results so after reading a few posts on here I decided to try a morning fasting test to see if my long acting insulin is working.

I took my long acting insulin this morning at 9 am when my blood sugar levels were 4.2, my following tests have been 7.7, 9.7, 8.4 and 6.0. I've had nothing to eat but 2 cups of instant coffee with small amount of milk to drink.

Apologies if this is a stupid question but do these test results mean my long acting insulin is working?

Yes looks like your long-acting is working well. What do you usually have for breakfast? It could be 1. The carb count is inaccurate 2. Your ratio needs altering or 3. it's the type of food you're having. I know some cereals 'spike' me and others give me a smoother morning! If you're confident the carb count is accurate you could maybe alter your ratio a little and see if your readings improve :)

Maybe it is just your ratio then. Have to say I do find bread/toast one of the things that messes with my levels though. Have you tried changing your ratio already?

Yeah, I recalculate it every week. I think I'm going to have to try a higher ratio for breakfast as the rest of the day is fine. Looking at the difference between my first test in the morning and my mid morning my mid morning is about double what it should be.

I've often wondered if it could be the toast but a sandwich never bothers me on a lunch time. Don't know if I can give up on my toast but if it has to be it has to be.

Hi Tracey

My BG normally goes up pretty much like yours if I skip breakfast with no bolus - I usually take an extra couple of units to cover it. I suspect it's the liver-dump.

I wondered that but then it didn't happen on the fasting test. Maybe the jam is not helping! I still think to maybe increase your ratio and also try missing out the jam?

Yeah, the jam would spike me too... unless it could be slowed down with a thick carpet of butter :)

Tried 1 slice of toast and poached eggs on Sunday and slices of toast no jam today and things are looking much better so thank you for the help.

Think I'm going to go for an insulin pump, can't fight my crazy blood sugar levels for much longer.
