Helloooo,

rightiooo...

i've tried a fasting test today and im not too shocked to see its up and down...

after not eating past 9pm last night (digestive biscuit as sugar was 4.9 before lantus 22units)

i woke up at 8.30... sugar was ...11.2 not so bad (believe me could be so much worse)

9.30am-17.3
no breakfast or insulin
10.30am-14.6
feeling sick as no breakfast but only had water so far... :(
11.30am-19.1
and this is where i am...

im due to have lunch at 12 which im going to stick to as i want my sugar to a reasonable level...

i know its extremely clear my background insulin is far too low!!

its just the reading of 17.3 that went down (not so worrying as its working away) then up to 19.1?!?!

what the frick?

can anyone advise explain help?

thanks in advance x

Hi ebony321,

I am unsure what you meant by (digestive biscuit as sugar was 4.9 before lantus 22 units) ?

So, were you 4.9 before bedtime or much higher? Say you were 4.9, an explaination for your high morning reading could be a hypo during the night. You may have slept through it, and your liver has dumped glucose. Alternatively, your lantus is far to low, and you need to increase it to bring down your morning readings.

I imagine you will not like the sound of this, but the only way of knowing is to test during the night. Most modern meters come with alarms to remind you to test, try setting it for 2.00am and 6.00am and test as normal, this will give you an idea of what your levels are like when sleeping. Perhaps you could try aimimg for readings of around 6 before bed, should you have the correct dose of lantus, it should not move much by morning. The only way of knowing is by testing, it may take a few days, and a few restless nights sleep, but it will be worth it..........I can assure you!

also try a daytime fast too as then the dawn phenonemon can be discounted,
have breakfast and miss dinner ,if basal insulin is at right level u should stay stable, if lower ..too much, if higher ...not enough :D
also if u higher your basal it can take a few days to make a difference so give it approx 10 days before highering again

Hi,

thanks for replying..

i meant i had a biscuit to prevent me hypoing in the night... argh.

makes sense testing in the night when you mention it.. i always wondered what goes on then..

i also heard that lantus can take 3 days to show an affect of changing the dose? is this correct?

so should i start again but add tests in the night and try to aim for a reasonable level to go to bed with so its more accurate from when i wake up...

this is definately not as simple as i thought it would be. and i didnt even think it would be simple to begin with.. argh.

booooo! :(

you will get there, i managed with the help from here and u will too :D

ebony321,

It is true that adjustment to lantus will take a few days to stabilise, that is why it is important to test over few days, rather than go on one days reading. Totsy's right, you could try fasting during the day, although you have not mentioned that there is a problem here. The 11.30am reading is a knock-on effect from the night-time/early morning.

Often you find with insulin, that all is needed is to adjust by 1or 2 units, therefore don't make the mistake of increasing your insulin to much and risking more hypo's. Only by frequent testing can you establish the correct dosage to take every day. Should you not have any success, have a word with your DSN about possibly spliting your lantus injection, this can help to resolve such issues that you are having. Also, it may well be that lantus insulin is not working for you, again your nurse will advise on switching insulns. Good luck!
