I am having my first lot of bloods done tomorrow since I was diagnosed.

The letter states no food or drink after 10pm ... I thougth it was just food. I need to take tablets around 11pm and tablets first thing in the morning.
Do you think it will be ok to have water?

Cant take painkillers at 10pm as they need to be spaced out due to containing paracetamol.

Also why the 10pm cut off - does any one know ?

thanks x

Water is fine and will not affect the blood tests.

Yes, plain water is fine. I believe it is the cholesterol test you have to fast for. We all do it, guess it just becomes part of the big D.

For my first fasting test I didn't take my BP tabs in the morning as I thought no water allowed.

Nurse said I could have/should have taken them

Thanks all. If I dont have my painkillers for bed I will have a bad night and I dont sleep great as it is.

Just wish I didnt have to go 12 hours and had an earlier appointment. As last time I had a fasting test for the chemist and was sent straight up the doctors who by the time I had fasting tests it was over 12 hours then and I nearly fainted - note to self put food in the car

Hi
I have been having a fasting blood test each year for the last 6 years when it was found that I had a glucose intolerance, raised cholestrol and high blood pressure none of which I am typical for..ie not a bad diet and not overweight...my doctor just puts it down to maybe being hereditary and age..I am 73...I have always been told I have to fast for 14 hours before the test and only allowed water to drink... fasting blood test are done to show glucose levels as well as cholesterol... .

So love my nurse at our practice, always gets my blood first time, unlike some others. I have veins that doesnt like to share my blood with anyone else lol

She too said we can have water - told her I had :)

Blood pressure was higher than normal, but she said it was withing the range - said it could have been because I get a bit stressed going up there. Feet - that was weird having a tuning fork on them, also had the monofilament prod, felt it all -phew as have been having a lot of foot pain which has been easing since my levels came down. Just wish some of the other pains would go so I can get off tablets!!!

The one thing I was a bit shocked with was my weight. According to my scales ( always weigh on mine as I leave to go up docs so I get an idea) and thought Id put on 2 lbs- anyway according to their scales I have lost 4.5 kilo since my last visit . Just hope nurses scales are the same as the GP room, but hey I will take the 4.5kilo loss  So since Christmas I have now lost 2 stones and gone down a trouser size, which are now baggy and can now wear a normal large ladies belt instead of a x large mans :D

Also I asked her if my levels were as high as they were and that my GP thought I had had diabetes for the past 5-7 years, why didnt they show up in a pre op assements, she said they should have so she is going to try to see if she can find my results.

Thanks again for the replies and will get my results next wedsnesday with my GP . (fingers crossed it wont be as high as last time 101 /11.4 )
