Spicey food, taxi drivers, hypos & hypers, pigeons, hospitals, dentists, my GP, my ****** immune system.
I am completely fed up. My sugars are up and down, my abdomen aches from constant cramps and other pleasant things and I have no awareness of my hypos which now means I cant drive! Not to mention the constant chest/mouth ulcer/gum infections I get despite taking a good multivitamin and enchinacea! I was on Metformin slow release but that was as bad as the regular Metformin for the side affects so had to come off it. I called my diabetes nurse and she cant help me til January (when I can get an appointment) so they can figure out whether or not to try me on Junuvia. I've been diabetic since I was 12, my Dad died from it, and I am just sick to the teeth of it now. Is there ever any let up :?:

:(

well, sugars are gonna go up & down, thats what they do with us :) but abdomen stuff shouldnt be part of the diabetic package, and the other "pleasant things" are tied in with that i'm guessing? hypo unawareness at 15yrs diabetes sorta goes contrary to what should be expected, especially with frequent high sugars.

have you ever been on any other insulins? are you opposed to trying diff flavors? despite their always stellar claims, and truly disconcerting lack of acknowledged side effects (and even more disconcerting lack of long-term studies), some modern flavors play less well with some folks than with others. while this page ( http://www.aboutlawsuits.com/lantus-insulin-side-effects-linked-to-cancer-4614/#comments ) covers a lot of folks' many issues with lantus, the real conclusion that can be drawn from it is that life might not be so great for some of those on it, and that modern medicine/big pharma aint very forthcoming with tales of customer dissatisfaction.

just a thought.

and of course, keeping tighter control of sugars -- if there are things you can do, ie: tighter diet control & such -- of course will help things altogether. flip side of that is, if your body doesn't love the insulin its getting, adding more to resolve sugars isn't necessarily going to play well with other things.

According to my doctor when some diabetics go high it can cause diorrhea and bad gas. I've also just been told I have IBS lol. My sugars arent usually high, they're usually fairly normal. It's just been the last couple of months that its going haywire. When I became diabetic I was started on Humalin M2 and was on the that for 8 years but became resistant to it so was changed to Novorapid (3 x 22 units per day) and Lantus (48 units in the evening). I've been on these insulins for 8 years without much problem up until now. Im not opposed to trying different kinds of insulin, whatever gets me back on track really! I've heard a lot about Lantus giving people problems but I have never had a problem (touch wood!).

I'll try and get a bit stricter with the diet see if that improves things. Thanks Microfazer. I'll let you know how I get on! X

Re: Fed up, fed up, fed up

I'm arty to ear you're having a bad time at the moment. Also really sorry to hear about your dad.

I think that's awful about your DSN. Isn't that what thy are they for? To offer support when you need it?! You don't just need them every 6 or 12 months (or however often you see them) so to tell you to wait is awful. Could you see a doctor instead? My doctor specialises in diabetes so is always a good bet. Might be worth a try. I'd also keep pushing your DSN and definitely bring this up at our next meeting. Sounds about as much use as a chocolate tea pot at the moment!

It's understandable that you feel fed up at the moment, but I think you know you need to improve things. To be honest I usually feel better in myself as my sugars improve, so this could help in itself.

Anyway good luck with it all. Wishing you all the best x

Elc, my useless GP was the reason I asked to be referred to the diabetic clinic at the hospital. LoL. I mean I'm overweight and not highly active but I've only been having issues the last couple of months. Usually, everything runs really well (I sound like a car!). I'm still working through my depression (new meds at the moment only been 2 weeks) so still trying to find the motivation to get on top of this again. I'll get there with support from you guys here cos its nice to be able to talk to others who are in the same boat! Thanks Elc xxx

fingers crossed, keep us posted.

I definitely will! This last week has been a [word removed] nightmare. I've got a cold and upset tummy and of course my sugars are sky high! Having trouble bringing them down too! Sooner they find a cure the better! Thanks everyone :)

Im just a newbie, but I am so sorry you are going through a rough time at the moment.

I do hope that you get things sorted with some help from your team

Take care, better days around the corner hopefullly, keep us podted.

Thanks alliebee, doesn't matter if you're a newbie or an oldie when it comes to the diabetes. It still manages to annoy!!!

Apologies, Daisy1 for the inappropriate word!

X

You'll get there with it. I can often be up and down at times for the rest of us who've had it years and years. I hope you manage to sort it, and try not to get too fed up!

Thanks McMittens I'll try! :-)

Not sure if this would work, but how about trying a 24 hour fast, to get your insulin back to a good level? Just take your lantus, and eat beef and lettuce (boring, but hunger-quenching) during the day. Monitor your levels. It would also indicate if your Lantus is working correctly. Then once you are back on course, keep a bit of tight control for a while.

Bad control can cause problems with your teeth/gums, so that is probably causing your ulcers etc. My dentist is almost as well informed about diabetes as my specialist is, which is great, and he keeps urging me to get my control to be fantastic, to prevent future problems with gum disease.

I'm always surprised by the high dosage of Lantus that UK peeps seem to be on. I was on 26 when I moved to France, and that was reduced down to 13 straight away. Are you sure you are on the correct dose now? It'll change if you lose weight, or put weight on.

Are you falling low so taking food to get back up, and maybe taking too much which leads to high sugars, so taking corrective doses, which leads to hypos etc etc etc?

I'm shocked that you can't get an appointment with the nurse sooner than Jan, too :( Move to France.

You're making me think of romantic France....oui oui...lol I'm going to give the fasting idea a go this weekend and try and work it out. Low carbs and more protein and see how I get on. Im due to see my GP on Monday so I will ask him about the correct doses etc. A lot of people seem to have trouble with Lantus. I've actually had no problems with it that I am aware of. Thankfully, this cold is nearly gone now so will be able to get back out walking too (if the weather permits!).

Thanks,

Yingal. X

hiya im new to this forum and have jsut read through your post, i am very similar to your self,
i have a theory that the bad controll can lead to ibs an lactose intolerance, as i have been told i have both, but this is only since my control has gotten very bad,
do you feel you would agree with that?
have a read through my post about it

Hi saz_pul

I had a read of your post and I did/still have a lot of the symptoms you describe. Especially the throwing up. I went through a year of throwing up in 2005 but didn't havea classic tummy bug to cause it. Eventually I landed in hospital because my body just couldn't cope. Luckily I'm not suffering with that particular problem anymore!

My hba1c has increased the last year and my control isn't great and yes, like you, I have IBS now and lactose intolerance. When I was 17 my hba1c was 17. Rebellious teenager I think!

Thanks for relying and definitely think you're on to something.
