Fed up of food.

I think the real problem is that the minute someone says 'you can't have that' your mind resists and you start to crave it. I never really ate sweets or chocolate before I was diagnosed, and then they said 'you mustn't eat it' and I was in hospital craving something sweet. Someone had bought me a bar of diabetic chocolate and I woke up in the middle of the night craving it. It was a big bar and I ate the whole thing. God, did I regret that - nobody told me it acted like a laxative!!!!!!:***:
 
I know how you feel, it's horrible, I got diagnosed in November too. I'm on fixed insulin doses three times daily and I'm only on 2 units of levemir in the morning. What really gets to me is the fact my bg is around 5-7 two hours after my dinner, and by the time I go to bed I'm between 12-15 without anything to eat since dinner!. I could understand if I ate a big cake or something but my dsn won't put me on levemir at night or increase my dose!. I really wish I was doing at least some carb counting.

Someone pass me an Easter egg please! Or a toffee crisp!

I know how you feel, it's horrible, I got diagnosed in November too. I'm on fixed insulin doses three times daily and I'm only on 2 units of levemir in the morning. What really gets to me is the fact my bg is around 5-7 two hours after my dinner, and by the time I go to bed I'm between 12-15 without anything to eat since dinner!. I could understand if I ate a big cake or something but my dsn won't put me on levemir at night or increase my dose!. I really wish I was doing at least some carb counting.

Someone pass me an Easter egg please! Or a toffee crisp!

Hi Samantha. I was in fixed doses for the first few months but then I started carb counting myself. I was too nervous to change my insulin initially so I just made a note if how many grams of carbs I ate and the insulin dose I took before each meal. If I was back to to the same levels before my next meal then I knew it was the right ratio. If I was higher then I had less carbs at the same meal the next day and I was too low then I had more. Eventually I had worked out my ratios and am now able to adjust my insulin based on what I eat. Most of the time anyway lol.
Why won't your dsn let you increase you levemir dose?
Also someone on here gave me a link to an online carb counting course, I'll try and find it for you as it was really helpful and I bought the book think like a pancreas which also helped a lot.

Thank you so much! that sounds like a good plan, I'll give that a go and see what happens. I'm like you, too scared to change it incase something happens! Even though it probably won't.

She won't allow me to start levemir at night because my levels drop through the night (not by much). If I'm lucky enough to have the odd night of going to bed with a bg around 8-9, I wake up at least 12!. So strange, but I'm probably still honeymooning lol

Hi Rosie, Do you change how long before eating you inject? If the carbs are fast acting I'll inject up to half an hour before I eat so that the insulin action matches the sugar spike, and for slow acting or fatty meals, I'll inject just before or after, or sometimes split the dose and take some of it an hour later.

No I have no idea how I would work that out! How do I know what carbs are fast acting and what are slow acting? Also what happens if I have a mixture of both?

That's okay. I still wouldn't be carb counting know if I hadn't just gone and done it myself as my DSN didn't mention it. It's made things so much easier and more flexible. Before I started carb counting having my levels in single figures was unusual but now having them in double figures is unusual. I don't get it right all the time and I'm still honeymooning too so my ratios change sometimes but I've definitely got better control than when I was on fixed doses.

Honeymoon period is nice in some ways because I'm not on much insulin but I wish things would just settle sometimes!

My biggest problem is that I ate loads of chocolate before diagnosis. I never ate sweets but I always loved chocolate and could easily eat a whole box in one sitting. And I love cake too. I was eating small bits of chocolate but I couldn't control myself so I just gave it up completely about 2 weeks ago, which is going okay. I just wish it was easier to figure out what works and what doesn't.
Oh god, I can imagine how much you regretted that :(

Inject more insulin, exercise, lose weight if BMI > 25 and you'll become more sensitive to Insulin and be able to eat Doughnuts and stuff.

Also if you're new to Insulin, it may take a while for your body to readily accept it. I found sensitivity increased over time :)
I think I'm still classed as underweight. I don't do any exercise though, I've kind of been avoiding it. I should probably start doing something I just don't know where I'd start. Hopefully time will do me good because I'm not sure what else can help. I think it's just a case of getting used to it all, I guess I jugs thought I would be used to it after 4 months

Give yourself a break woman! Life is tough at the mo'! Have you had the chance to look at any more wedding dresses? Big hug! :)

In which case it sounds like you just need to take more Insulin to match carbs. Nothing wrong with that as long as blood sugars are within range.

4 months in, you're pretty new to this. So don't be too harsh on yourself. It really does get easier with time. I've got to the stage where I don't need to test anymore as I can match my carbs pretty well.

Exercise is great, if you got the time go for it, it doesn't have to be boring and daunting, find something you enjoy and do it. You'll feel much better psychologically, it'll help physically and give better control of BS, and allow more of those bad carbs to be consumed ;-)

I really hope it does get easier. I thought I was already matching insulin to carbs but obviously missed a few factors that I should be taken into account.

I guess it is getting better and easier compared to when I was first diagnosed, I'm just a bit impatient I think and want to know it all and have it perfect straight away

You've got loads of time! We got married nearly 12 years ago and I didn't get mine until a couple of months before the big day. My husband got his suit in the summer sale but bought the next size up and looked a bit like the honey monster! (Sugar puffs ad from 80s) . We got married in Sweden and I had to book a seat on the plane just for my dress - lol! Have fun!
