Fed up

Totally sick of low carb is there anything else I could do
Hi @pokersteve

If you can let us know more what you are actually eating? How long you’ve been doing low carb? what your BG levels are like? & what if any meds you are on? (your profile says tablets but that could cover a few things) & what foods you are missing eating?

Sorry lots of questions but the more info you feel you can share the easier it is for someone to maybe come up with ideas for you :)

I agree with @lessci - low carb & keto isn’t for everyone & it has to be something you enjoy & lifestyle change for life, no point in being miserable. Doing something else but needing meds to keep you BG under control is just another choice available to you

My numbers are around 9 not doing low carb at the minute trying to find an happy medium

Those numbers are a tad high, when you say not doing low carb how many carbs are you eating & what kind of food carb wise? Are you on any meds for your diabetes? If you can share a typical day food & what meds, just so the answers you may get will be safe for you, you may have some wriggle room. You may not need to adjust your carbs too far down to get your numbers down & find that happy medium. The numbers below are for the NICE guidelines for T2, though most of us here with T2 prefer to be much lower, I like to be no more than in the high 5s after a meal as it’s purported that anything above 7.8 is when damage starts, but some have experienced complications lower than that.

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
It’s your choice of course to pick the numbers you are ok with :)

What medications are available to Type 2s that do no cause hypos?
Flozins, gliptins, metformin.

A happy medium sounds sensible. :)

What carbs are you mainly missing on low carb? A reduced portion size of the carbier components of your meals with increased veggies and protein could be something to look at.
There's a difference between a plate full of potatoes and only a little for flavour with a larger portion of the rest.
Same for bread: If you put lots of toppings on your bread and don't skimp on the butter, you'll need less bread to feel full.

I’m assuming the 100g carb is per day not meal, I used to do 130g carb a day when I was on Gliclizide, so it’s doable if you’re ok with taking meds. I dropped down to 80g & reduced my meds by half and still ate a small amount of new potatoes a spoonful of rice now & then. I dropped my meds completely & went keto & I must say on the whole I do enjoy my food more, I do miss some carbs like pasta & a good homemade pie but there’s alternatives to almost everything. I’ve seen some members on here talking about pastry made with panda flour so I’ve got some of that to try as a pie. it’s a commitment & you have to be inventive & not get stuck in a rut with the same foods.

For example tonight I’ve had harissa roasted salmon with green beans & asparagus tossed in an avocado & mayo dressing with a couple of roasted cherry tomatoes.
Yesterday I had chicken breast with leeks & cheese baked in the oven with celeriac mash.

If you really can’t cope with low carb perhaps it’s time to speak to your GP about extra medication to at least allow you to enjoy a few carbs.

Have you just gotten bored with low carb or is it that you don’t really enjoy it at all?

Harissa salmon sounds lovely - how did you make that? avocado & mayo dressing sounds lovely too is that pre brought or how did you make it? I never thought about chicken with cheese & leeks but again it is a new idea for me and I will give it a try - thanks

I’ll put it in the recipe thread so as not to derail this one :)

The recipe thread? I wasn't aware there was one, how do I find it please? thanks
