Feeling Better

Hi all. Diagnosed type one last week.

I'm beginning to get some energy back after being put on insulin. My bloods were 30+ before hand and now they are fluctuating between 5 and 19 throughout day.

I know everybody is different and we all deal in different ways, but when will I feel better emotionally?? I'm not at the point where I feel sorry for myself and won't get out of bed or go to uni. However, I'm am finding myself becoming anxious about possible complications. I have heard horror stories about people gaining weight on insulin and that terrified me to the point where I want to just not have the insulin.

I am very active, I do around 20 hours exercise a week and I eat a fairly healthy vegetarian diet that stays within the right amount of calories.

In order to remain positive. Can someone please tell me some nice stories about their journey since their diagnosis?

I am trying to think of it as a positive to keep even better care of myself and to become more in time with my body.

Thank you x

Hey I was diagnosed at 17...I was really ill when I first found out but I was positive! I kept positive for about the first 4 months or so, then I started my second year at college studying professional dance. Then it hit me, having diabetes and trying to start a hard active career was awful...I ended up having to leave college and get a regular job to have a 9-5 life...past 3 and a half years I have struggled so bad, made myself ill and pushed everyone away the reason am telling you this is because I gave up on myself and lost all my positivity about it...be strong and you'll get through it I promise! Dont push anyone away when it gets hard and I promise you too that it will sometimes get hard but with support you'll get through it stronger than ever! I have now started on an insulin pump and its the best thing I have ever done...eventually you might be able to get one too anyways stay strong and dont let it take over your life! Beat it dont let it beat you xx

Sorry I hope I haven't scared you or that a just should have just put it simple...the stronger you are the less controlling diabetes is. You will find days thats hard but dont let them get you down and always ask for help if you need it...stay positive as thats where I went wrong! I hope that things are good for you and I wish you all the best with your health in the future xx

Tyler, thank you for sharing that with me. I plan to keep working my hardest and I know good will come from it.

I really hope that you take time to do a dance class every so often. It's like therapy

You seem like such a positive soul and I am grateful for your reply my diabetes nurse wants to get me on the pump asap. However, am I concerned of it getting in the way in dance class. What do u think?

Thanks again xx

I have stopped dancing now as I work a full time job looking after disabled people. Pump is the best thing I had ever done! Styles of dance do you do? And if you feel like the pump would be the best thing for you there are different places it and be put so its not in the road. Eg...when people go running they put the ipod or whatever in an arm band thing? You get them for pumps...ones for arms, legs and tummys...but at the end of the day you have to do what is right for you and your body and over time you will figure that out if you dont mind me asking where are you from?.xx

It's early days yet and there's so much to take in when your newly diagnosed, in time you will feel emotionally well again as your bg begins to stabilise and you get use to living life with diabetes.

I wouldn't worry about weight gain unless it happens, as you say you eat healthy and exercise plenty so your doing all the right things, if at any point you do feel it's all getting too much then don't be afraid to ask for help from your diabetes team and come on here for support, we have all been in your position once over so we fully understand the difficulties and emotions that you are feeling right now.

I do contemporary dance and I also enjoy pole dance too. It's great for my upper body strength. I live in Liverpool. What about u? X

Thanks. I supposed I just need to meet some more people with it. It turns out that I used to train with a guy who was diabetic and I had no idea until now. He is a dancer and has been very helpful.

How long have you been diabetic? Do U still find it hard?

Well with contemporary you dont always wear leopards and tights...can put a baggy top on or a loose dress so covering your pump will me no problem what so ever! Pump could be an option for you eventually Scotland, live near Edinburgh x

There's probably a local diabetes group in your area that meets every month, if you contact Diabetes UK they should be able to tell you or you can look on their website for contact details.

I've been type 1 for 32 years now, I don't find it particularly hard now as I've had it so long I've just got use to it

That's great. I will definitely look for a group.

As a Diabetic T1 for 50 years I have a simple piece of advice, don't let diabetes rule you but you rule the diabetes and take advice from the professionals.Good luck
