I was diagnosed as a T2 in January and very soon after that I found this community. Until yesterday I just 'lurked' and ready many posts and absorbed the advice. I was very upbeat that I could get on top of this condition with some changes to my lifestyle and diet. So I sent off for a Codefree tester, lancets and strips and reduced the amount of carbs I had been consuming. I used my tester on some of my favourites foods just to see what happened to my BG levels and the results confirmed what most people on here tell us. I've totally avoided any white carbs and only had a small amount (say 2 slices per day) of Seed Sensations always with plenty of cheese or other fatty fillings. One of my favourites foods is homemade soups and I was horrified with the reading after consuming a small bowl of Scotch Broth (I guess it was all the barley). My own vegetable soup was fine and surprisingly so was my lentil soup. That just shows how valuable the testing is. Porridge was also OK - yay!

Anyway, the last few days have been quite difficult as I'm suffering from a pain in my stomach. It's not actually agony but very unpleasant and I have been wondering if eating fattier foods has caused it. I was so bad today that I didn't eat at all until 17:30 when I had a 3 egg omelette and the pain increased a little soon after I'd eaten. I'm also suffering from a mild headache and have been for the past few days. Could this possibly be related to my T2 diabetes or is it more likely to be something else. I'm not due to see my diabetes nurse until April and will be attending a Desmond course in May.

Hello weefergus, welcome , glad you came in from the shadows, are you having any meds for diabetes yet?

No meds for diabetes yet. The nurse said to try diet changes first and we'd see after 3 months. I do take a statin, aspirin, long-term antibiotics and a number of anti-histamines.

What is the my fitness pal? My BMI was 35 on Jan 15th (I've lost 9lbs since then). Yes, I am using a Codefree meter several times a day.

Hi and welcome! I expect you know many of us quite well already.

I think that if I were in your situation with a pain like that, I would be heading to the doctors fairly quickly.

It could be so many things, depending on type of pain, location, when it happens... Best to check with your doc. Then, if it is fat related (like gallstones) or not (like most things), you'll be in a better position to decide the way forward.

Let us know how you get on?

Hi there, going to GP sounds good. Just until you have had gp advice on cause of the pain, maybe cut back on the fat as if it is gallbladder related higher fat content in diet could aggravate your symptoms at least short term. (Had my GB out yonks ago). All the best.

The headaches can be due to low carb flu. Have some water and half a teaspoon of salt and see if it helps.

It can take a while for the gall bladder to get into shape if you suddenly go from a diet low in fat to a high fat diet. Give it time to adjust. To check for gall stones you will have to go for an ultra sound, you GP can refer you if needed.

Feeling a bit better today. I cut back on the fat today and only ate some porridge, some lentil soup (homemade with more vegetables than lentils), some cooked mussels and a slice of seeded bread.

What are your current BS readings? Belated welcome from me too

Mike

What are your readings? Belated welcom fro me too

Mike

Today my reading were 7.6 after getting up, 7.1 after porridge (2 hours after), 7.7 after lentil soup (again 2 hours after) and 8.5 after mussels and slice of bread (1 hour after) and 7.1 after 2 hours.

I'm very new to this having been diagnosed mid-January. I'm due to go back to my DN in April when she wants to see my HbA1c down to 47 from my fasting test of 53. I decided to buy tester etc. having read many posts on here and test at 1 hour and again at 2 if I'm having a 'new' food e.g. mussels and bread and only after 2 hours when eating a known food e.g. porridge (same amount, made the same way.

Well those figures don't appear to fluctuate a great deal and that is great (though we'd need fasting as # 1, before you take your first bite of breakfast (#2) one hour later (#3) and 2 hours later (#4) and repeat that routine for lunch and dinner.

Ideally, they should be lower, but heck, you've just been diagnosed They sort match my start out numbers and I've got mine down to 6s 5s and 4s.

Sounds like you are travelling well

Will post readings as you suggest tomorrow. I'm quite thrilled that you managed to get your levels down so successfully. I don't understand why all of my fasting readings (except 1) for the last 18 days (when I started testing) have been between 7.0 and 8.0.

Thank you

No reason why you can't As I said, you wanna get them down (all of them no matter the testing time) to 7.8 or below but the 7.8 is the top end number.

Around (say) 6s or high 5s is really the target before meals and 2 hours afterwards. You don't appear to have the spikes many experience in the early days.

Mike

So, I dutifully recorded my readings today and some of them are quite horrendous and I do seem to have spikes. I've posted them in a separate thread (as I no longer feel dreadful).
