I'm sitting here feeling really depressed. Today is Easter Day. A day when the rest of the world is tucking into Easter eggs and having fun. My family knows I'm diabetic so they don't buy me chocolate. I decided to treat myself this year and bought myself a box of Green and Blacks Mini Eggs (tiny little things, they are!). 70% cocoa solids, so I thought the higher the cocoa, the lower the sugar - fine! Oh, how wrong I was! I've had 2 today and I took my blood sugar at 8.00pm having had dinner (chicken kiev, mashed potato - no butter, just creme fraiche and Benecol, and mixed vegetables, no dessert). My blood sugar reading was 11.1! Why??!! Surely 2 tiny chocolates at 2.00pm this afternoon hasn't done that much harm?
I take 500mg Metformin and 5mg Glibenclamide a day.
I've been diabetic since 2001. The first few years were okay. I was good and took control of my diabetes really well. However, in about 2006 things started to slide and I stopped taking my blood sugar readings regularly, stopped taking my medication and became lazy about going for doctors appointments. I was forced to 'wake up and smell the coffee' in January of this year when I was admitted to hospital. My blood sugar was checked regularly there and I was immediately put on medication again because it was high (surprise surprise!!). I promised myself I'd never let my blood sugar control slide again.
Sorry if I'm rambling, but I'm a mess.
Please someone, tell me what I'm doing wrong.
