Hi everyone

So I've been feeling pretty ****** lately and finger prick tests over the last week or so were showing higher readings than I'm used to despite losing just over a stone in the last few weeks on slimming world. Although I was diagnosed 8 years ago, I have so far managed to control my diabetes without medication. Anyway, I had bloods on Monday and went to clinic today. My
HbA1c was 80 so I start on Metformin as soon as the prescription is ready. Up until now, my highest HbA1c was 50 which was last year (2.5 stone heavier than I am now!) and no treatment required/offered. Apart from that, everything else is good - blood pressure, liver and kidney function, cholesterol 4.3, pulse etc in feet fine, urine not showing elevated sugar or protein.

I'm feeling positive because my nurse was super supportive, answered all my questions and encouraged me to test as often as I feel necessary. She recommended this website, wasn't phased when I cried over the stressful year I've had and basically made it easy for me to believe I can absolutely turn this around. She says she's only a 'phone call away and I should make use of all the resources available, which I fully intend to do. Shes enrolled me on 'MapMyDiabetes which is full of great information and a way of setting targets etc. So yes, its bad news having to be medicated but positive that I can turn things around again.
Thanks for reading ;)

Welcome to the forum and letting me know about MapMyDiabetes. Unfortunately, access to the website to whatever advice and tools they are providing is not available to me

The DN nurse put name forward and I got sent a password and link. It shows my latest results so I'm guessing they are personal to you rather than being a site anyone can browse. Perhaps ask your GP for access?

Hi, your header says it all, Feeling Positive, it can be ****** at times, but it is manageable. You're on a great site here 'cos when we all fall off the wagon a bit there's loads of support help and a laughs available. Keep going and you'll work out your own way.

Keep Positive

Thank you for your kind words

Following on from the first post..
I am a full week in of taking 500g Metformin.
I tentatively started low carb high fat too. Tentative because I have a fair bit of weight to lose and my brain was struggling to accept that fat is good.
Anyway, I haven't weighed myself because my weight loss is about feeling better and getting things back under control
I'm testing every day and I'm pleased to report my numbers are falling nicely. Whether I attribute this to lchf (already?) or the Metformin, or a combination of both , I don't know but after only a week, things are certainly going in the right direction. Only last week my morning bloods were anywhere from 10 to 14.
Pre food around the 10 Mark, rising to up to 14, falling only 2 or 3 maximum after 2 hours. My bloods were 9.1 at 22.15 last night, 9.1 at 645 today. 8.9 1 3/4 hours after lunch, down to 7.4 4 hours later, 7.8 before tea rising to 7.9 1 3/4 hours later.

I know this is a lot of testing in one day but I've already established this last 7 days that I can tolerate satsumas and raspberries far better than my favourite banana, that even a small amount of potatoes is a no no at the moment and coffee with cream is bloody lovely
I know I have a long way to go but I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am with these results after just 7 days. I'm sure at some point I will grieve the loss of some of my favourite foods, but I'm chuffed that I've made so many changes so easily.
I have no clue what the ratios of my food are but I'm finding 100g carbs or less is easily achievable and seems to be working. I already feel more alert and I have less brain 'fog' .
So yes, still positive and determined to go into 'remission'
