Hi there Im a new diabetic on metformin. I dont test. Since Thursday Ive been feeling really ill, getting worse feeling really weak and exhausted and nauseated with achy joints and blurred vision. On wednesday I stood out for 12 hours doing a traffic survey in the cold, I am thinking I may have picked a virus up or is it lactic acidosis or DKA or HONK, Ive been googling this and Im getting more and more anxious. I have been eating a lot of sugar as well.

I think you ought to get an appointment with your GP. Even if this is a virus the GP will be able to put you straight.

hi gordie,
i felt the same almost constantly before i started on metformin and testing my BG. Aching and tireness was the worst part!! if your still eating a lot of sugar then thats probably why you still feel like rubbish. My doctor told me not to test, as she said i may get to wrapped up in what my levels are, but to be honest, i think, if i wasnt testing and can actually see what sugar/carbs do to my levels, i would have carried on regardless!!! i would buy a tester and see whats going on if i was you!

You don't say if you don't test coz your doc said not to/won't prescribe strips, or if you don't want to?

like aly says, testing helps so much. - if you can't get blood testing strips/meter then try the urine ones, they will at least tell you if your blood sugars are very high. You can also get test strips that tell you if you have ketones (too many ketones => DKA)
