Probably an over dramatic title but I did. Done the last of the Christmas shopping today (presents) and we used a burger joint for a coffee.
I genuinely felt like I knew the end of the world was coming. All the customers sat there stuffing themselves with pretty much, nothing but carbs.
Big baps with a skinny supposed burger dripping in sauce, 'chips' or should I say processed potato again with sauce and a big coke. Looking around EVERYBODY was overweight some excessively so , (you know the look, like they have been filled with water),and still ploughing into carbs. I was cringing inside. Probably 100 people in the restaurant and I honestly felt like an alien.Every shop or stall selling food was either in a bun or a wrap, most with chips or tortias etc.

Its the first time I have really had the weight of our diet/lifestyle choices really hit me like that, the penny really did drop, more like a concrete block. Just how small a minority we are and how completely and utterly we are bucking the norm, amazed were not carted away, good job the inquisition is finished. It also slams home just how big the problem is and will continue to be.

My sanity was saved by a stall selling hog roast, I asked for just meat, no bun or apple sauce and after giving me an odd look, I told him I was diabetic, (not confusing muggles with pre etc) he said that was no problem and happily filled a flip container with just meat and I got way more than if it was in a bun. Oh man it was delicious. I did 10000 steps during the shopping trip so a bit of gravy is irrelevant.

Mr hog roast and a Bratwurst store not far away were doing sparse business compared to the fast food chain stores selling carbs.

Its as big a step to change the public view as Columbus saying the world was flat that fat is not bad for you.

In all quite a mentally revealing day.

As a T1D I agree with you @Spl@? Of course the bread is a filler so that profit margins stay 'healthy' rather than the customers staying healthy. Enough fat to give a feeling of fullness but carbs to keep people coming back as the sugar hit wanes !!!
And not having to cook, what a relief!!! - ready made drink and food, no food prep, cooking or washing up. And we used to think microwave cookers were for cooking - nah! just to heat up frozen commercial dinners or take-away!!
The food industry is slowly turning our countries' people (mine is Australia) into slobs. I feel like an alien here at times too!!
And what are Governments doing? a sugar tax - gee whiz, whoopey do! So people try low calorie drinks ? They still have caffeine in a lot of them plus artificial sweeteners muck up your bowel bugs and up goes the insulin resistance. So the drink companies switch some drinks to low cal and the Governments wonder why things do not improve.
Of course the Eatwell plate and the Aussie food pyramid are both influenced by Big Food so no help there.
I really hope that neighbourhoods can band together, negotiate with food retailers, supermarkets to buy healthy food in bulk, shift away from soft drinks, unhealthy take-away food places (but find ways to employ people and maintain businesses which were once those fast food places).
And keep local supermarkets local. Ours presently takes its stocking of food items order from the Big Store, hundreds of kilometers away in another State.
Is it time for an alien invasion and take-over???
