I was diagnosed with Type 2 last year and partly as the nurse didn't think it was a big thing, partly as I was in denial I wasn't particularly proactive about my management. Having read some posts and posted recently I have realised that I need to look after myself more and get my surgery to look after me as well. I presumed that my BG levels weren't too bad and my Hbac1 was OK too - until I started looking at others signatures. My last one was 9 - which is obviously high compared to all of you who are managing to keep yours down at 5!!!
I was told by my surgery I only needed to be seen once a year for checks - but as I wasn't feeling too well just before the summer I asked for another test! I saw another GP who has prescribed the januvia and have to see the nurse/have bloods done in 3 months. At no time have I been offered a BG monitor, dietary advice and the promised eye exams I am still waiting for a year on!

I realise I need to be proactive and start pushing for things so that I don't end up with health problems later on.

Any help, advice or just a hello would be really welcome!

At least now you can get to grips with this and beat it, control it. It is doable and you are in the best place for help and support. There is usually somebody around to help out.

You need to take it all one step at a time, that way it doesn't all get too much. Glad to see you have seen another GP who possibly will be more helpful with your Diabetes.

Glad you have decided that the time has come to do something about your diabetes. There are plenty of people here who will answer any questions that you have. Ask away anytime you need to and no question is considered silly.

Thank you both - need to remind myself of the advice - have just ordered a carb counter book as well to see if that is any help for me!

I love green - hence the signature! sorry if it hurt your eyes

I am still unsure about a couple of things - will diet coke be an issue for me? no carbs, no sugar - but obviously it has sweeteners so not sure!
 
I drink plenty of Diet Coke and it has no effect on my Bg levels at all. There are other's here who say that it does and also may want to avoid any sweeteners. I am not bothered about that, just a personal thing. Testing is really the only way for you to know it's effect.

It really is the carbs you need to consider in most things unless you have an aversion to sweeteners.

Most people here find that diet coke doesn't affect their blood sugars.
You really need a meter and test strips because even if you sort out your diet you will never know what is OK for you to eat and what is not. You can get them from any chemist. Ask which one has the cheapest strips and then when you eventually see your GP/DSN you can put a case forward for a repeat prescription for the strips. Explain that you want to be proactive in your management and you cannot do it in the early stages without a meter.

I did post a couple of mins ago - and my post has disappeared into the cyber sky!

I hope diet coke will be OK - don't drink tea or coffee so that is where I get my caffeine fix from!

My only other issue will be chocolate - not sure how I will manage that - but as you say if I monitor I might be able to figure out if I can have any :roll:

It's OK now.....actually the shades are cool ! As for my user name.....you are not the first.....however I have been called many names, here and elsewhere.....some not too complimentary. If it makes them happy......well I suppose they need to have some fun sometimes......

As for Horses, nearly. Worst thing I ever did was get my daughter riding lessons when she was 8 yrs old.......it cost me a fortune over many years. I did try but without a brake and accelerator plus a steering wheel I didn't exactly feel too comfortable.....give me four wheels any day ! :wink:

Funnily enough my son had a course of riding lessons - he is transport mad - it was so funny watching him trying to brake and accelerate on a horse!

I promise not to call you names - except nice ones!

You should have seen me on the Horse....I was in my 30's at the time. My mates didn't help matters as they stuck 'L' plates on it's rump....... :lol: Take your lad go-Karting....it's much cheaper !!

As for the names.....don't make your mind up yet..... :twisted:

Don't mention horses to me! :evil:

When I was 15, I went out with a girl who had a horse and went along with her one day, the **** thing kick out and hit me in the thigh nearly breaking my leg, I hobbled home and my dad said I deserved it for being so stupid to stand behind a horse in the first place..........but nobody told me this did they!!! :cry:

Wasn't too bad though, I had the week off school!
