I've been diagnosed about 18 years, type 2 on glic, met and lantus. The past few weeks I've been lower carbing and controlling my sugars so well (between 5-7). Last night before bed I was 5.1 so I reduced my lantus from 42-32 units. Less than an hour later I was sweating, heart pounding and couldn't focus. Sugars 2.9. I didn't have anything else in so it was jam sandwiches and chocolate. 20 mins later they had shot up to 5.7. They are 15.7 now! I've got an eye operation (unrelated to diabetes) on Monday so I'll have to tell the hospital. I assume the diabetes clinic will suggest I reduce my medication. Any thoughts? X

They will suggest you reduce your meds, just make sure to keep some fast-acting glucose by your bed such as Coke, Lucozade, Glucotabs or Jelly Babies as these are better suited for treating hypo's.

Yeah thanks. My brother is a paramedic and he suggested lucozade, dextrose tabs and I've seen stuff about jelly babies. It was bloody scary though

Not nice I know, keep some fast-acting glucose on you too or in your bag and coat pockets. Hope your eye operation goes well on Monday.

Thank you. An added complication is I'm having skin graft from my mouth to make eye lids (I was born without an eye socket or eye) so god knows what I'll be able to eat next week!!! X

if you have a draw by your bedside I suggest putting some sweet stuff in there in case it happens again, I have sweets in mine.

I learned from my dietitian when I was young that liquid concentration is the first remedy for blood sugar lows that you want to look at, because it enters the bloodstream quicker than any other method. So you should always keep a bottle of apple or orange juice sitting close by so that you can drink some of it and easily bring your sugar level back to normal. Hope all goes well for you.
