Hi all,

I have a first set of fasting results back as follows:
HbA1c - 102
Plasma fasting glucose level 12.7
Lipid profile and liver function is satisfactory.

From googling this sounds quite high to me 102 being the higher value and the most consistent, whereas 12.7 is a little lower but was probably due to the fasting (the assumption being it'd go up after eating for example).

I have the first nurse appt next wednesday but will be worrying until then as as I understand it 102 is quite a way up the scale. I've been thirsty, weeing a lot and lost some weight in the last few months so all the signs are there.

Is 102 really that bad?! :/

These are 2 different measurements with different units. HbA1c is a measured in mmol/mol and is an indication of what your blood glucose levels have been like over the last 3 months. Fasting glucose is measured in mmol/litre and indicates what your blood glucose is at the time of measurement.

If your blood glucose gets above about 10 or 11 mmol/l, the kidneys can't reabsorb all the glucose and it spills over into the urine which has an osmotic effect, pulling water with it - that accounts for the weeing a lot.

102 mmol/mol is high but there are people on this forum who've been that high at diagnosis and managed to bring their HbA1c down to normal (or close to normal) levels. Some of them will probably be along shortly to explain what worked for them.

We are not allowed to diagnose you here. However I can tell you the the level for diagnosis hb1ac is 48mmol. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/Diabetes-diagnosis.html

And for fasting it is 7. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/fasting-plasma-glucose-test.html.

T
hey are different tests in different units. The first gives a 3 month average level and the second a moment in time snapshot.

So I would expect a diagnosis if I were you. It is fairly high but there have been higher on here that got sorted quite quickly. The good news is now you know you can do something about it. And you can! Don’t despair you’ve come to a great source of information and support.

How old are you? Are you over or underweight? How much have you lost? Did they do any other tests like c peptide or antibodies? These are relevant to which type of diabetes you may have, which will affect which treatment options you have.

Do you have a meter?

Have a read of these and come back with any questions you might have. These assume type 2 which is the more common type in adults. Fundamentally control is about how many carbohydrates you eat (not just sugar or white ones but all of them)
