Hi All
Recently diagnosed T2 in the past 10 days and still coming to terms with this new world I've entered! I'm trying to do my very best with diet and exercise and haven't been offered any medication. Am happy to do this and hopefully get fitter, leaner and healthier too. I have just received my first HBA1C results of 7.4. Should I be concerned and alarmed at this figure or not. My GP is seeing me next week but I need to have as much information beforehand to enable me to really understand what is happening. If any of you experienced people out there can help me I would be very grateful.
Thanks Gill

Hi

At the top of the greetings and introductions thread there is thread 'questions to ask at the diabeteic clinic' it is worth reading.

I was put on medication at 7.8 but I had been creeping up, they may give you a chance to try diet and excercise first.

They will weigh you, test your wee and should talk about referrals for eye screening and feet screening, talk about your cholesterol.
But read the thread coz there may be things that I have forgotten.

Thanks very much anniep. I'm not too keen on going onto meds without giving it my best shot at diet and exercise first. Having spent time reading this forum I hope I will be in a much better position to discuss with my GP what I want and not get bullied into the medication route at this stage.
Would also like to add that this forum is amazing! So many experienced people willing to share their knowledge and experiences. I feel part of the diabetic family already!!

Hi,

I'm type 1 and my diabetes nurse always tells me that the current guidelines for the HBA1C should be less than 7.5 so at 7.4 your doing really well in my opinion. Obviously double check with your doctor as I don't know if these figures are different for type 2 :) Well Done though :)

As far as I know the figures are lower for T2's, when I was in the 7's I was told I was badly controlled by the practice nurse and one of the practice doctors. But then the dietician told me I was ok !!!

I have just found this on this site

'Due to the fact that red blood cells survive for 8-12 weeks before renewal, by measuring HbA1c an average blood glucose reading can be returned. For non-diabetics, the usual reading is 3.5-5.5%. For people with diabetes, an HbA1c level of 6.5% is considered good control, although some prefer numbers closer to non-diabetic. '

My last hba1c was 6.4 and the doctor halved my metformin.
