First holiday as type one

Hello,
I am off on my first abroad holiday to Majorca next month since being diagnosed last year. As I am only away for four days, I am taking just cabin luggage only. I know I need a letter/repeat prescription from GP for airport. Any other advice/tips I should be aware of? Can I put my insulin in a Frio cooling wallet thing in my suitcase before flying so it's nice and cool for when we arrive or does all medication need to be in a clear wallet? Limit of medication etc for hand luggage? Can I take as many sweet bags as my heart contents? Etc etc. I am still in the honeymoon period and v insulin sensitive and BG levels drop considerably with heat hence wanting to take lots of hypo kits! :p I have travelled abroad with my diabetic brother before but when it's not yourself you don't really pay full attention to all details ha.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Kelsie,

I hope you have a lovely holiday and will bump your post up for replies from Type1s

If I'm using a Frio I tend to put the insulin inside a clear plastic wallet (ziplock/small sandwich bag) before I put it in the Frio. When I get to security, I just take the insulin out of the Frio (still in its plastic wallet) for screening. Just remember to put it at the top of your bag so it is easy to get to. :)

On taking lots of supplies, I've travelled quite a bit and never had a problem - I think the official guidance is that you can take whatever you need in hand luggage if it is for essential medical reasons. When I've done longer trips and wanted to cut down on the amount of hypo treatment stuff I carried, I found the best treatment to take was GSF Syrup. They are individual sachets of hypo gel and a box of 12 sachets takes up a small amount of room. I also find the gel a lot easier to treat myself with than dextrose tablets, etc.

I travelled for years as a type 1 using pens and don't think I was ever asked for my medical letter (although I have needed it since I've been on the pump). I don't expect you'll encounter any issues at all. Enjoy your holiday. :)

Hi,

I've never had any issue with security with my D stuff... I have never put it in the clear containers as you would with wash bag stuff..
Hypo stuff has never been a problem either. Though I don't take bottled drinks.. Haven't even been asked to produce the doctors note either..

Have a great trip!

I've just got back from my first holiday since diagnosis. At both airports I kept the insulin in the frio wallets through security plus had 200 needles, lancets, test strips in my hand luggage and didn't have any questions/searches.

Enjoy your hols
