Hi

New to this forum although I have had type 2 for 10 years it was not till recently aged 67 that It has effected me, my type 2 has been controlled with the usual tablets, but about 6 months ago there was a sudden change, my Blood levels started spiking shooting from 7 to at one point 21 when this happened I was admitted to hospital for investigation they checked for infections and many other things but found nothing and I was discharged and started visiting a diabetes centre so that it could be monitored.

5 months down the line I am still having spikes in my BL's and also when this happens also feel unwell light headed and very tired, my consultant suggested that I switch to Victoza and drop some of my tablets, he said this will also help with losing weight which has always been a problem, I have been on Victoza for about 3 months, not too many side effects lots of wind and tightness in the stomach but not too bad, This has still not stopped my BL spiking good news is I have lost about a stone in weight which is good.

Does anyone have the same experience with spiking that I have? my consultant seems to thing it may be a change in my pancreas but has not suggested any solution other than strict diet routine and keep losing weight, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi ossieboy and welcome to the forum.

Would be interested to know what this "strict diet routine" consists of as this may need tweaking to stop the highs and lows.
Are you on any medications for other health complaints that may interact? There are quite a few meds that people take for non diabetic related complaints that can raise blood sugars.

Thanks Catherine

At the moment I am awaiting an appointment with the Nutritionist at the NHS clinic but there seems to be a delay as I have been waiting around 3 Months, generally my diet has not changed over the years, but since these spikes I have become more aware and have cut right back on anything sugary and tried to keep to a low fat and low carb diet. Overeating seems to be the trigger for the spikes to occur, so portion size is the order of the day now. I also have high blood pressure this is kept under control using Amlodipine . The only new Med introduced is Victoza all the others I have been on for years, however the spikes started before I was put on Victoza

My meds are as detailed below-:

Metformin 500mg xTwo twice a day

Victoza (Injection) 1.2mg/ml per day

Doxazosin 4mg x1 a day

Perindopril 8mg x1 a day

Asprin 7.5mg x1 a day

Gliclazide 80mg x1 a day

Amlodipine 10mg x1 a day

I am very over weight I am a DJ, I drink a lot, but now I have changed my drink to vodka and soda water 0 sugar . I find it hard to stop having sugar it seems to me it is everything. Hello and welcome Ian!! Are you newly diagnosed? It is very confusing and frightening at first! Hopefully you will find as I did that coming on here brings lots of information, support and friendship!! I'm only 10 weeks into type2, totally out of the blue diagnosis, like you thought "sugar" but soon discovered its carbs....since starting lchf my levels have dropped, weight is dropping and I feel alive!! Hardly ever hungry either and my tastes have changed dramatically!! (Vodka is an ok for us too! )

Hello @iancong the main theme in here is reduced carbs and some are on low carb + hi fat diets.

I am on LC, if you want first hand on LCHF you have to talk to someone else.

The other consistency in here is with weight loss, everything measurable health-wise gets better.

Everything about LC is a bit different
No serving size limits.
Your new hobby can be cooking
You can eat more cakes and sweets then you ever did (but LC alternatives only)
Big weight loss is immediate but then it slows

That is meant to be encouraging and I hope it helps.

Hi, Ossieboy.
Are the Asprin 7.5mg x1 a day, on prescription,
Your meds do appear a little odd.( best get your GP to update your requirements )
Do you use a BG meter ?
( My sister was taken to hospital after a similar event but it was related to high blood pressure.
luck would have it that they soon diagnosed that she was pumping down asprin tablets ( after a cup of tea etc; ) over and above her recommended medication thinking they were helping her health etc;
She is now in good health and wisely banned from asprin.)

A slight change in diet might be just what you need, but dont be to harsh on your good self.
Best of luck regarding your visit to the Nutritionist at the NHS clinic.
