Got my blood glucose meter up and running. Got the actual machine set up, managed the lancing unit OK. Had a bit of a problem putting blood onto the test strip. I wasted one but mastered it with the second one. The reading was 4.9mmol/L This was just after a meal. All I have to do now is learn how to analyse the readings. It`s a steep learning club. Kenny

4.9 after a meal right after ? just seems a non diabetic level, but the right way to use the meter is just before eating and then 1 hour after eating and 2 hours after eating. Then you will get more reliable numbers if you measure right after eating the food hasn't been broken down yet and you will no nothing of what is actually going on.
At first do your morning test before eating and then like right before lunch and dinner and then after 1 and 2 hours later on you will know what kind of foods spike fast and which spike slower and you will only need to make one test after eating . Do write down excactly what you eat and how much of each in grams. and in particulary the carbs

Kenny, keep a food diary including portion sizes, and record your before and after levels alongside. That is the way to learn.

Test immediately before you eat (after washing hands and drying thoroughly) then test again 2 hours after your first bite. Keep an eye on the actual rise from before to after. Initially this should be less than 2mmol/l. Eventually you will want to lower this target and start testing at other times between eating and the 2 hour mark. Slowly but surely, you will get there.
