i use pre-filled insulin pens which when finished with the whole pen get disposed of, i was thinking why in these days of wanting to be environmentally friendly why have companies made these pen which create alot more waste and why do they get prescribed i would have thought it would cost less and be more eco friendly if every one who used pens got the reusable pens such as the novo pen and was just prescribe refills, as these pens are made from metal so in theory should last years

My lantus was initially given to me in a pre filled pen (Solo star) but after my dafne course I discovered that there was a pen and cartidge system available. At my next GP review I asked (as I was also concerned about the number of pens I was just throwing away) and my GP happily switched me to a lantus cartidge and pen system.

The pen is more plasticy than metal so not sure how long it will last but it has to be ethically better.

Most of the insulin do come in a reusable pen system...

Most companies to have a range of pens, that are either plasitc or metal, lilley and novadisk have both types..

I think it hit and miss to which type last the longest, as when I used them I found that some would last for years, and only need replacing because the numbers had worn off, and others have failed..

If changing or have a reusable pen, it is wise to ask the doctor to prescribe (or just request on repeat as mine are on repeat) a spare pen (each type if using two different makes of insulin) so that you always have a spare pen..
