fluctuating sugar levels?

Hi all,

I thought I'd join the forum as I need some help/advice.

I've recently been having trouble keeping my post-breakfast pre-lunch level down. For example, this morning I woke up on 10.0, then two hours later was 15.7, then 6.9 and just now 4.6. the same thing has been happening for quite a while now and I'm not sure how to resolve it. I'm using apidra and lantus, the latter is taken at night and 10 units given. If I put the lantus up more I'm concerned that it'll bring the lower levels too far down. Basically I have the same breakfast each morning - 2 slices of toast one with butter and one with jam and inject 6 units, tried 7 yesterday but that made no difference to the second test result (17.0).

Anyone know the best way to get around this?

Thanks all.

Hi Mr Tickles and welcome to the forum. It looks like you are experiencing what is known as the dawn phenomenon. Basically on waking, our livers get a bit overactive and make our bloodsugars rise. It's not fully understood, but the effects are definitely easy to see. You may need to up your insulin dose in the morning to counter this. My advice is to make any changes to insulin gradually, and in small amounts. Make sure to test plenty, So you don't have unexpected hypos.
I also give the same advice to any diabetic I meet: read Dr Richard Bernstein's complete diabetes solution, and check out this video
. These were revolutionary for me, and have given me an HBA1C of 5.4, with few hypos.
Best of luck, and be sure to stay on the forum. Let everyone know how you are getting on, and you will be most welcome :)
