Just been diagnosed with Type 2 - Readings between 12 + 16, start meds on Monday but I am really struggling to understand what you can and can't eat.

For instance Crisps are very low in sugar but I have heard that as they are potato based then there is an issue here.

Does anyone have a quick run down of a few things that can get me by for a while till I see the dietician.

Is Pasta ok ?...what should I be looking for on labels other than just sugar ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dave

Dave the word to watch out for is Carbohydrate. Now carbohydrates are divided into simple sugars such as sugar ,glucose, fructose,in fact anything on a list of ingredients with 'ose' or 'ole' is a sugar. With me so far? Now the nearer the top of a list of ingredients the sugars are the more there is in the product.Simple sugars are absorbed quickly and raise your blood sugar(BS) level quickly.
Then we have Complex carbs. These are found in potatoes, rice ,pasta, bread. These complex carbs are just as important to notice as they raise your BS as well but more slowly.
When you read the label on a product therefore look at the total number of carbs it contains not just at the sugars.Try and keep your carb intake down so that your BS levels will come down.Keep asking questions !
