Food Portion Advice

Just wondered how much veg/salad you guys eat with each meal. I am new to low carbing and have not been weighing anything out - tending to eat quite a bit of green salad and or veg with meals - just looked at Dr Bernsteins Book and notice that he recommends no more than a few grams with each meal - which equates to about a half cup of salad/veg etc.

Do you tend to just go for it like I have been doing or stick to relatively small portions of the salad/veg. I would be interested in any advice on this as currently my weight loss seems to have stalled and I wonder whether this could be playing a factor.

Hi Fletch

I have been low (and now medium) carbing for many years and never even knew about Bernstein or that its called 'low carbing', I have always had a huge appetite so any other diet with 2oz of this and 1oz of that and whatever only lasted for a couple of weeks or so and then I caved in because there was never enough food on my plate, even though I bought smaller plates (trying to kid myself)

So I have always eaten really big portions of vegetables, the really low carb ones and lost weight, whenever I reached a plateau phase I would increase my activity levels and soon started to lose weight again.

All the best

The official size of a portion is that which you can hold in the palm of your hand. I eat MASSES of green leaves. I can easily consume a whole Iceberg lettuce, just dressed with a little splash of balsamic vinegar. Myum!

Hi.
I do the same as Choc.
I eat freely of protein, fats and veggies, but restrict fruit. I have about 1-2 slices of nimble a day but no other visible carbs at all.
I also scoff nuts (not peanut or cashews) and anything that is very low or carb free. I've never eaten pre-prepared food.

If I had to measure anything, I'd give up, go potty and be horribly fat again.

Good luck!

Hi Fletch, I am a T2 and dietician and follow a low-carb diet like you. Personally, I try to eat at least 8 - 10 portions of veggies/salad a day and providing you avoid potatoes and are circumspect with the amount of root veg you eat, then I wouldn't worry - it is almost impossible to eat 'too much' green/leafy/salad veg and these low-carb veggies will do you the world of good so go for it.

If your weight loss is stalling can I suggest keeping a food diary for a couple of weeks as this can really help you focus on what you are actually eatling - I know I often get comfortable and think I am eating more or less than I actually am!

I'm fortunate that my system still seems to give out pretty effective stop signals when I've eaten enough. The only time this broke and I actually started putting on weight was after the NHS dietician got a hold of me and started replacing all my healthy fats with carbs.

This seems to be a common factor in many people's experience of low or reduced carbing. There are two important factors in salad and leafy vegetables - fibre and water content - both of which seem to give out satiety signals and make it difficult to eat too much. Having said which other individuals may not find this but I imagine it would be difficult to overeat on non-starchy veggies.
