As a newly diagnoised diabetic-last Wednesday. I haven't got my head around what I can and can't eat, so if it's not too intrusive can people tell me what they eat?

I have a blood sugar level of 24 and am taking Metformin-only 1 a day at present-goes up to 2 next week. I have an appointment with a D/N on Tuesday but I need to eat in the meantime!
I work shifts so have always found meal times a bit of a problem, for instance lunch at 12 and tea at 7.

Any food and drink suggestions will be very welcome, as my GP sugested I eat 'anything with skins on'

Looking foward to your suggestions

If you have a cat I hope it runs fast!

I found that cutting down on the starchy carbohydrates helped me enormously. I no longer eat grains which includes cereals, pasta and breads etc as well as rice and oats and no potatoes. I get my carbs from the fruit and veg I eat and this works well for me. I started off testing before meals and 2 hours afterwards to see what the different foods did to my BG levels and ate to my meter cutting out whatever made me spike.

You really do need to test as we are all so different and some can tolerate things that others can't and vice versa. 8) If you are not offered a meter and a prescription then ASK for them and tell them that you want to be proactive in mangaing your condition. Hope they come up trumps! If not you will need to purchase your own. :(

You would also benefit from buying a Collins gem Carb Counter (£3.99) or similar book which will give you the low down on a broad range of foods.

I now eat things like meat, cheese, eggs and fish with vegetables and/or salad stuff and also fresh fruit in moderation.
