hya everyone,

thankyou in advance if you read this or put an answer

does anyone struggle with food? in that i mean not eating for a few days or eating nothing with carbs in, i am struggling to eat enough carbs or food which has a knock on effect with taking my insulin, just wondered how people got around this or dealt with it, my dn says i need to have more carbs so i can take quick acting, or eat more for the same result, i am doing better but need to do much better. i am type 1 (pancreatic diabetic)
 
What are your numbers like if you are not eating/not eating carbs? I eat very few carbs, most meals with none and my numbers are actually much better without them so there is no 'need' to eat them if you can get good numbers without them. I do however have a pump so if I eat a small amount of carbs I can still take a very small amount of insulin and I do see how this could be more difficult on MDI, but maybe a half unit pen if you don't have one already may help if you are only needing small amounts of insulin to cover a small amount of carbs.
 
my bs are always very high, my dn has said its going to be a long hurdle to get them down, but thats because of the sort of diabetes i have, i am on new insulin and have now started to see low 20's so this is good news for me. do you constantly lose weight may i ask.
 
What type of Insulin are you on? Generally getting the basal dosage right is the basis for everything else as really your basal should be able to keep you in range all day without you eating anything, I know that sounds easier on paper than in real life but it really is the foundation for everything else so trying to get that right would be the first step. Once you have that right then working out what you need to cover food (or not cover food as the case may be!) is the next step. What are your numbers like first thing in the morning when you haven't been eating overnight? That can give an indication of how well your basal is working and once you get good waking numbers you can test your basal at other times of day to try and get it set right.

To be honest if you are having numbers that high then I'm not sure why trying to eat more carbs (which will raise your blood sugar) is being suggested as a solution. Is you DN a specialist at a hospital clinic or at your GP surgery?
 
i am on humalog and my background is degludec, my waking numbers are between 15.1 and 18.9, its because i have lost a lot of muscle mass, dn is a specialist from the hospital, i have a lot of health issues and im on alot of medication so this all has a bearing on the numbers, since starting the new degludec i have seen lower numbers which is good and the weight loss is not as bad as it was so its starting to go in the right direction, but have just started heart medication so its messing with my numbers again,
 
Hi @muggle666, I think I remember you saying you're a type 3c. Type 3c is a form of brittle diabetes and it does take a while to get those blood down. (I know, after 8 months I celebrated a 13.6 the other night!!). Also type 3c can't generally LCHF because we can't digest fats properly so I'm guessing that's why your nurse is telling you to eat more carbs!! What I've done is try and work out the worst carbs for me - so I know pasta, potatoes and rice are my biggest problems, sending my blood sugars onto the high 20s, so I've cut them out. But I still eat weetabix for breakfast, and bread at lunchtime! As a 3c It would be better if you eat regularly, you body finds it hard to digest food so in my experience (15 years of the pancreatic bit), I find little and often is the easiest way, it reduces the nausea, whilst keeping up your nutritional needs. thankyou sue, that makes sense now, i am finding it quite a struggle never eaten loads to start with tbh and now having to eat is like so much pressure. i was so chuffed to see a 15.1 and actually seeing 20's is really helping me trying to stay focused, i think the change to my meds hasnt helped much either, and now adding others is knocking them for 6 again lol, but its nice to see and hear that they will get there eventually. its just test after test though and finding other complications thats adding to the stress of it all. i will be glad when i have got them down to decent numbers though
 
Hang on in there @muggle666 ! Don't forget you are trying to manage both your pancreatic problems and your diabetes at the same time, so lots of the usual diabetes rules go out the window! It is going to take a while to get the balance so be kind to yourself!! I remember the no appetite phase and being grossly underweight (I'm 5'7" at at one time was 6 stone - now 8 stone). Try soups, berry type fruit, jelly, dairy if you can manage it (I can't except abit of skimmed milk), chicken, veg. If you fancy a jacket potato or something carby, then have a small one and test 2 hours after to see what effect its had on your bloods. You will need the carbs because you need 'energy food', and you need to put some weight back on. It's just getting the balance right, it will come eventually. Sue xxxx
 
thankyou sue, i struggle really bad with potato and bread, only eat it as toast as it dries the bread out and i can digest it better that way. am not too bad with dairy at the moment, but am struggling to find food i enjoy, taste buds seem to have altered loads. it gets worse when i either get the tinny taste or the ketone taste and when i get it together thats the worst then cant eat. am only losing between 3-6lb a fortnight now so thats better than it was, have just come out of a bad relaps of 4 months and have now been told have left side ventrical problems of the heart, its nice to read there is light at the end of the tunnel though and that things will get better, i hope your doing good and things are looking up for you too x
 
I can't remember @muggle666 are you on Creon? How are you taking it? What strength and how many? BTW, try angel delight (no added sugar one if course :)), or no added sugar custard and chuck some chopped up fruit/berries in - good way of getting some extra milk down and it feels like you are having a treat! I know that horrid taste thing, but it does go eventually - honest!! Hang on in there! Sue xxx
 
no am not on creon anymore when they discharged me they took me off everything, the diabetic consultant said they shouldnt have euther discharged me or took me off it and is looking into it, i will try that i never thought of it, thankyou, im glad that the taste will go cos thats a real issue lol, hope your keeping well and thankyou x
