life after diabetes!
please help!
ever since i developed type 2 (9 years ago - age 52) i have started developing excrutiating foot pains.

first it was like walking on blisters. after a couple of years as if there were cuts around my toes and in the gap between them and the sole of the foot.
later i started getting intermittant stabbing pains as if someone was stabbing my feet.
most of the time socks and shoes make the pain worse.
a life long walker, my ability and range has decreased steadily. now i can comfortably walk only for about 15 mins.
i can however still cycle quite comforatably, but the anatomical posture in cycling is much closer to the natural form than our human upright posture.

my father had type 2 as well, and suffered the same thing - he descibed his as like "walking on sharp gravel in bare feet".

the pain now radiates nearly to the top of my legs, and if i stretch or walk too quickly, i get fierce cramps in my calves and thighs, only cured by a hot bath or hot water bottles, which takes 2 or 3 hours or over night.

i have had endless discussions/arguments with health professionals about this over the years.
my GP and diabetic nurse just stare at me blankly when i complain about the pains and the cramps.
from another medic i was told that the atenolol prescribed me was causing it, and that i should be on an ACE inhibitor. i was later prescribed an ACE (ramipril) but am still prescribed atenolol as well.

painkillers don't work - if they're really strong i cannot function, so i only take ibuprofen for bursitis in my left hip.

anyone know what i'm talking about? or am i suffering from something non-diabetic related?

cheers in hope

Sounds like Nuropathic pain from my personal experience
Ordinary pain killers will not touch Nuropathic pain (what are you taking now ?)

We/I are not a doctor

Go and
Ask /Demand that your GP to refer you to a Pain Consultant you will find its the only doctor to take your pain seriously, Pain consultant will get to the bottom of the pain and refer you on if he needs to

You don't need to put up with pain now there are loads of Lovely Drugs and Treatments to help you out with the pain the only real access to these is the Pain Consultant

Welcome to the Forum Teddy.

What are your blood sugar levels like ? Do you test them at all and what is your HbA1c ? If you have constantly run with high blood sugar levels this may be a factor in these pains that you are having. Do you also take Statins ? Specifically Simvastatin. One of the side affects of this is muscle pain in some people.

Ask for a referral to an Endocrinologist for more expert advice as your GP and nurse do not seem very clued up !

Thanks so much for the prompt replies everyone.
I only joined this forum yesterday, as this pain and immobility is very depressing.

My HbA1c is generally 8.5 in the winter and 7.5 in the summer.
The nurse reckons that's because I'm housebound in the winter and able to cycle most days in the summer.

I was started on gliclazide last week, and been asked to start testing my blood sugar, starting next week, 3 times a week, pre medication and meal and 2 1/2 hours post.

Am on Pravastatin as well, tho' the only concern has been my liver, as I had a liver resection for benign tumours 3 years ago.

Was originally treated by the local endocrinologist, so maybe it's time to see him again.

Will def persue the pain clinic angle.

Thanks once again - I feel a little less desperate and depressed about all this.

My problems started 3 yr ago with a physical injury to now being type 2 also .Push your GP as i had'nt done and spent the last 3yr in misery. Have you tried a heat pack for your cycling posture?
