All I know is for me thrush came first (from childhood memory). Then excessive growth (I was more than 13st at 13yrs old. Well developed. My mind too.). Then Bell's Palsy, Hypothyroidism, Pcos and then approx 113 as a Hba1c.
Only once diabetes diagnosed was my weight addressed by the nhs. They used a feather duster to do it.
I was still oblivious to circulating insulin and symptoms in childhood til I joined here!

No other known diabetics but plenty of obesity in my family. All women turned portly after children from baking cakes, savouries from pastries and dumplings to fill up the men.
Climate hasn't received a mention but the very cold north-east warrants hot soups and stews in the winter. Its bitter in the winter winds. So diet is an influence. A huge one for comfort and decadence in less frugal times.

There is a recent publication of the Journal of Clinical Chemistry
Thanks for posting this great article @Oldvatr!

The take home message is that for certain people who are genetically predisposed to ‘high-glucose stimulated insulin secretion’ a high glucose diet, such as those promoted in several national guidelines, is obesogenic. So, tragically, rather than being healthy for some, these ‘health’ guidelines instead drive unhealthy obesity for many.

After 37 years, maybe it is time to for our policy makers to take a good hard look at the actual health outcomes we have seen since the 1980/1983 guidelines were published, taking our current knowledge of genetics and epigenetics into account.

After all, to paraphrase what Robert Burton the 17th Century Oxford Scholar said in 1621 in ‘The Anatomy of Melancholy’: when proposed cures are “imperfect, lame, and to no purpose” it may be because we do not truly understand the underlying causes.

Well, we are starting to understand the underlying causes now.
