for those of us who eat Burgen bread

Just wondered if anyone had noticed slight changes to the bread? - For the past few weeks I have thought the bread seemed softer and more "breadlike" - not a massive change - just a bit different - less coarse and more springy.

The other day tested before my lunch of an egg mayo on two slices of burgen - this is a well tested meal for me and has always given good results- I only tested because I wasn't feeling right - was 4.2 so that was fine as I was about to eat. Noticing the bread changes once again I thought I would test 2hrs later - I had 7.4! not a good result for me as like to be nearer 6 - usually in the 5's with a buttie.

looked at the nutrition and noticed they now say 12g carb per slice - not a big change I know but sort of confirmed to me that I was right about the bread being different.

Tested a bacon sandwich yesterday - fasting reading 6.1 - before lunch (4hrs later) 6 - I am always in the mid to low 4's before my lunch so not a terrible result but not a usual one for me.

Anyone else noticed or am I just being pedantic? :roll:
 
What I have noticed is that as Burgen gets more popular (it seems) the turnover increases and the "sell by" date is a bit further off, so the bread is a bit fresher. Hence the bit "springier" I thought, because it's fresher. Perhaps it's better for BG whern it's gone a bit stale! Hadn't noticed the subtle change in carb content - maybe just rounding up?
 
Just checked my Burgen and it does say it has 12g of carbs per slice and not 11.9 as previously stated. I can't say I've noticed a change in the texture of the bread or increase in my bg (mind I inject insulin) but it might be you need to cut back or look for an alternative make, I'm sure Sid Bonkers mentioned one from Tesco's a while back that was seeded much like Burgen and give similar postprandial results.

Yes Nigel I found that Tesco's Rustic Multigrain bread is OK for me and gives similar results to Burgen, I buy the small loaf which obviously has a smaller slice than a large loaf, that said I still seem to be OK with the large loaf but it is more bread than I like in a sandwich a small loaf or the Burgen is about right for me.

Yes I noticed the 12g carbs as well, oddly enough I was filling out a days food diary just the other day after xyzzy asked about my cpd (carbs per day ) and couldnt remember the exact carbs but know it wasnt 12 before, I havent tested it though as it has always been OK, but I will test this afternoons sandwich and post my results :thumbup: .fingerscrossed smiley.

I eat Burgen Soy & Linseed and I get good readings normally... it's a nice bread. Although it is low GI so that may explain the difference perhaps for you lovinglife.... probably just depends on how your body is breaking it down. I find I don't always get the same results despite eating the exact same food and portion at the same time, etc.... it can be frustrating sometimes.
 
I have only ever been able to tolerate one slice, so tend to keep it in the freezer and just take out a slice as I need it. My loaf which has been there a while is still showing 11.9g of carbs. I will check it out next time I buy one. I do think it is getting more and more popular, and they may have changed the recipe slightly, which seems crazy if it is getting more popular as it is.
 
OK heres todays lunch time readings:

1.11pm.............................................................. 5.9
Lunch Burgen ham sandwich
2.12pm..........3/4 of an hour after finishing lunch...........6.4
3.25pm..........2 hours after finishing lunch....................6.1

So the change in nutritional info doesnt seem to have made any/much difference to me at any rate
 
The mathematical difference between 11.9 and 12 is insignificant. I can't see how something like bread can be assessssed to a single decimal place.
However, I have noticed the slices looking thicker and a slightly sweeter taste.

The slices can sometimes vary considerably in any case, that's why I always weigh bread even if it's sliced.
 
It could just be that they've rounded up the .01 just to err on the side of caution due to inconsistencies in slice size.

Yes that is very true although I don't weigh mine before eating.
