Forxiga question

Hi,

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes about six years ago, currently taking 2000mg Metformin but my HbA1c has been a bit up and down seems to drop then heads back up to 56.

Just had a review and the Diabetic Nurse has prescribed Forxiga in addition to the Metformin. I haven't picked up the prescription yet, but she sent me a link to an information leaflet. I have read the leaflet which like most of them is a bit scary and I have read a lot of things online and on here.

Have any people taken this long-term with few or no side effects, how bad is it really. I am well aware that people tend to post most about negative issues. So far I haven't had any issues with Metformin or the statins I have been taking, so I am sort of optimistic, but I obviously have concerns reading some of the posts.

Sorry for the long post but any real life experiences would be much appreciated.

TIA

I have been taking Metformin for a long time but just recently started Farxiga. My doctor thought it was important I take it to avoid future kidney issues. You will find that you cannot be far away from a restroom for any lengthy period of time. You will also find that you will need to drink ALOT of water to avoid being dehydrated. I have made these adjustments so far in the interest of my health.

Thanks for your experience, must admit this aspect concerns me a bit, guess I can only give it a try and see how I get on.

I stopped using it years ago when my type 2 diabetes was well in control because of these issues. Recently however, I could not manage my blood sugar with meds anymore. I had to start using insulin, which brought it back under control. At that time I talked to a nephrologist. She strongly recommended I start using Farxega again and I have adjusted to using it.

I take the same combination (metformin and Forxiga). I did get thrush in the first couple of weeks but that was because I thought it was a magic pill so I could eat more carbs! Lesson learnt, keeping the carbs low and making sure I drink plenty of water is working well. My BG used to be in the mid teens and now it’s in the 5s, 6s and occasionally 7s. I must admit taking the Forxiga keeps me from eating too many carbs as the thought of another bought of thrush isn’t pleasant. I don’t have any side effects now.

I didn't think my Hba1c reading was that high at 56 especially in the run up to Christmas and had been planning to restrict my carb intake to lower it. It just bothers me that I feel fine and this could make me feel worse.

That's reassuring, I hadn't had any reaction to other meds, hopefully I will be lucky with this. Strange some people say you need more carbs when taking it others say less, guess I will have to experiment. Thanks for your response.
