Hey all, I've only posted once or twice before when I can't see a good thread that helps me (I almost always find what I'm looking for on previous threads/discussions) but I was wondering if anyone has taken Forxiga and has it helped with weight loss?

FYI - I'm a T2, on a combined insulin and metformin.

My diabetes is in good control and my latest hba1c was 56, but I'm putting on weight.

Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Insulin (and drugs that increase the amount of insulin our body makes) tends to increase weight.

Taking Forxiga should allow the amount of insulin you have to be reduced. Eating a lot less carbs would also have the same effect unless you are already doing LCHF.

Very few people with T2 on insulin can lose weight and keep it off, so the first step to weight lose is to control your BG without using insulin. But don't change the drugs you are on without talking to your doctor, so eat better to lower your BG a little, then get your doctor's agreement to lower the insulin and repeat. Forxiga should help with this process.

Hi @superbarney - I have a different view to @ringi on his opinion that very few T2 using insulin can lose weight and keep it off. I would say, from observation, there are more and more who are doing just that.

Actually just taking insulin doesn't make individuals gain weight, although if the carbs to insulin rations are a bit off then it certainly can happen. Over the years I have been a member here (it'll be 4 in November, I think), I have seen more T2s arriving with similar issues to yourself, or simply just wanting to trim up a bit who have, by careful dietary choices and good insulin balancing lose weight, which often in turn reduces insulin resistance, meaning less is required. Quite a number have actually managed to come off insulin over time.

Could you maybe clarify a couple of things for us, please?

Firstly, what medication are you on. Your thread title is Forxiga, but in the body of your post you say you're taking a combination of Metformin and Insulin? Are you actually taking all three meds?

What sorts of things are you eating, and what levels of insulin are you using?

Just as an aside, your thread title doesn't really give a big clue to your question. If you think you might like to change it, or add anything, just let me, or any of the other Mods know and we can do that for you. It's also absolutely fine to leave it as it is, if that's what you prefer.

The fact DCUKMod disagree with me about how hard it is to lose weight while taking insulin is not important. We both agree that reducing carb is the best option for most (all) people with Type2.

I am happy with high fat with low carb if it results in someone being able to come off insulin, other people are only happy with high protein with low carb. The research is starting to say high fat results in more weight lose, but most doctors are still happier with high protein.

The only two meds that I know of with benefits for reducing insulin resistance are Metformin and Forxiga (plus other related drugs). Most other diabetic meds increase insulin resistance.

There is a catch 22,
  • insulin resistance leads to high level of insulin in the blood (from our body or our drugs)
  • being overweight increase insulin resistance,
  • high level of insulin make it hard to lose weight.
This can be broken with the help of
  • Metformin and/or Forxiga
  • Eating few (if any) carbs
  • Exercise to build up muscle mass
  • Intermittent fasting
  • Compressed Eating, so you have all you meals within 10hrs, so fast for 14hr a day
  • Etc
I expect most people will have to commit to at least 3 things from that list.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away. So to answer your questions. At the moment I take Metformin and sitagliptin, along with a combined fast and long acting insulin, Humulin. I take around 16 in the morning and 18 at night. I used to follow a LCHF diet but didn't get on with it at all, now a more weight watchers style of just healthy eating. Lately my sugars have been almost in range for a while but I still seem to be putting on weight, 2kg in 3 months. My specialist suggested adding Forxiga to my routine and I just wanted some advice please before starting? Thanks.
