Morning all.. i went to the doctors yesterday and was told the news ... he gave me two levels of 8.7 and 11.4 not sure what they are as was shocked by the news..and i was told i need to go on 3 tablets a day.. starting them 1 a week... going to see the diabetic nurse too.. but do you allways go straight onto tablets as i would have thought they would try to change your diet first... all new as you can tell... any info would be helpfull.... thanks

Hi Craig and welcome to the forum Some people go on medication straight away, some don't. I started with no medication but my Endo decided to give me some after 3 months, at my next appointment. But you are right - you can help a lot by adopting a good diet. Here is some information that should give you an idea of what to do to help yourself. Ask as many questions as you like and someone will know the answer.

should i be testing my bs as i was not given a meter to test with or do i need to buy my own. seem a bit lost with it all at the moment...i am back to doctors soon....

thanks

Ask your Doctor first since you are seeing him soon - he may give you a prescription. If he doesn't, which happens frequently, then unfortunately you will have to buy your own testing kit. Sometimes they say you don't need to test but it is much better for your health to test regularly. You can usually get free meters from the manufacturers - choose one which has cheap strips, then most people here buy their strips off the internet. You need to test mainly to see which foods you can eat and which foods you should avoid. Test just before a meal and 2 hours after and if the results are similar then the food is OK for you. Otherwise try adjusting the portions, or if that doesn't work, then you will have to stop having that particular food unfortunately. Ask again if you have any more questions.

Hi Craig, Firstly I would say to you try not to get over anxious about it as there are lots of people with type 2 who have been going along quite well by just adopting a healthy diet.
I have been T2 for nearly 5yrs (I think) now and due to losing weight I have been able to get things well under control. My nurse who I saw a few weeks back was delighted with my progress. I am not fastidious over my food intake and I did test regularly at first...the thing is to do what is best for you and try not to worry as that does not help matters.
All the very best to you.

Even though I got a testing kit, my son, who was recently diagnosed wasn't given one. I fought for strips for him, and he got them, but no meter. I emailed Abbot, and he was sent a free one 2 days later.

Hi. As others have said, try to get the diet right and this should help a lot. I guess your tablets will be Metformin. If they give you stomach problems ask your surgery for the SR version. Metformin has few side effects overall so won't do you any harm and will help blood sugar a bit in addition to your diet. If you are unlucky as I was to get the metallic food taste with Metformin don't panic as it will eventually fade away.
