Hi

I Fracture my Tib & Fib on the 4th of May 2009. I have had a full leg cast on for six weeks then moulded knee down to the toes cast.
At presnt there is no sign of any healing of the bones, ops and mental work is a very last resort according to my doc, due nuroepahty. I have been a insulin dependant diabetic for about fourty years.
As any one been in the side position as me if so, what was your out come and have you any advice, re healing, prognosie, time span

Yours Peterjs

I have no personal experience of this, but I do know trhat healing in diabetics is slow and that the better your blood sugar control,( aiming for 5 at all times), the better the healing process will happen.
My T1 husband has ha a diabetic foot ulcer heal in about 3 months, which has surprised the podiatrists who expected it to take much longer. His Blood glucose control has been TIGHT.

Good advice from hanadr, healing a bone takes time, and the closer your bg is to non-diabetic levels the better, I have had a fracture a couple of months ago, I was advised to follow a really healthy diet but I am doing that in any case, my orthopaedic consultant explained "Healing of bone requires more nutrients that the body needs to simply maintain bone health. Patients with injuries should eat a balanced diet, and ensure adequate nutritional intake of all food groups" Also if you are smoking it will alter the blood flow to the bone and it will take longer to heal.

I have also taken a homeopathic remedy to help speed up the healing process, not sure if it helped really I probably was healing quickly anyway but I personally believed that it would just help me. As for other supplements as in vitamins and minerals, I get all those from my diet anyway so did not take anything extra.

Here is a link you may find interesting, but please do check with your medics or pharmacy before you take anything even if it is considered safe. http://www.ecologyhealthcenter.net/node/177

I hope you get better fast.

All the best

Karen

i can only tell you what happened to me, 9 wks ago i broke my ankle and calcaneum in half, i too was worried about bone healing, luckily the bone healed well and now i am on the slow road thru physio etc to walking unaided as i also tore ligaments and tendons,
i have kept my bloods as low as possible and eaten an healthy diet which as hana says does seem to help, hopefully u will heal soon :D

Hi Peterjs,

I too had a #tib&fib, just over 10 years ago. I ended up with a plate and multiple screws and should have had a bone graft but didn't.
About 9 months ago my leg became more painful and deformed so I had to go to see the surgeon again. I was sent for a nuclear scan after more conventional xrays.
The titanium plate has broken into 3 pieces and several screws broken or unscrewed. The original # still hasn't healed (after 10 years!). I need a bone graft and other surgery. The prognosis is a bit iffy.
Since all this happened I have been diagnosed type2 diabetic, high B.P., high cholesterol, angina etc;
I've postponed any surgery for now as there is some risk involved, and living alone I need both legs attached - preferably!
I have done some research and feel the extra risks outweigh my present need for surgery. Some say I'm wrong, and some not.
The way I look at it (in my case) I can still get about at present, and don't fancy picking up MRSA or C.Diff in my local hospital right now.
I don't have your problem of neuropathy, but do have a history of DVT in the same leg, together with a previous road accident involving the nerves, bones and tissue, so I reckon we probably are a fair match!

Your circumstances may be diferent to mine family-wise and so on, so any decision must be for you to make together with family and the doctors. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck.
