Is the starter kit meant to come with test strips for the reader?? Mine didn't. Will this make a difference if I use my own meter instead??

No it doesn't come with strips. If you have a problem with a sensor then Abbott like you to use their strips as a reference (but you don't have to tell them you didn't ;) )
