Hello, I just started using the freestyle libre since today. I finally got my hands on one (it took me some time since it's really hard to get one here....)

I just had one question about it.
I decided to only use the freestyle librelink app simply cause it would take 15 days to order the reader and I didn't want to wait any longer.

I was looking at the trends and I was wondering if the sensor actually tracks your levels while not scanning? For example during the night? Or does it just draw lines between the latest scans? Because that's all I can see for the moment, that it draws lines between previous scans..

I was wondering if this is completely coincident or that it has something to do with using the librelink application?

The way I understand it is that it will take a measurement every 15 minutes for eight hours and then it will overwrite so you should not leave it longer than eight hours between scans. The graph does look like a line joining up scans but you can always try not scanning for a long time to see what happens.

As @Squire Fulwood mentions, the Libre takes readings every 5 minutes.
It stores these on the sensor. The sensor has enough memory to store 8 hours of data.
When you scan, you are transferring the last 8 hours of data to your reader/app.

If you scan less often than 8 hours, any older data is lost as it is overridden by the letter data.
This means you need to scan before you go to bed and as soon as you get up. Otherwise you may miss some readings.

It takes a reading every 5 minutes and gives you the average over the last 3 readings when you scan along with the direction its going in. It should be showing you a moving graph not a straight line between the readings.

"The FreeStyle Libre sensor automatically measures and continuously stores glucose readings day and night. The sensor updates the glucose result up to every minute and stores up to 8 hours of glucose readings in 15 minute intervals. Can be worn for up to 14 days"

I got this from the libre website and I am not sure if it makes anything clearer. "Updates...result up to every minute .....in 15 minute intervals".

It's on this page.

Whatever, don't leave it longer than 8 hours between scans.

The per minute update is used to provide the "direction of change", a Type1 gets great benefit by knowing if their BG of 4 is increasing or decreasing. To save cost (and power) it does not have enough memory to store all readings.

The pro version (for doctors) stores a lot more readings but does not take reading as often, as it is designed to let a doctor review 14 days of readings.

Thanks a lot!
I just woke up and scanned after 8 hours of sleep and it did show me graphs (got slightly into a hypo while not waking up but my liver did the work for me...)

I think I was just being impatient haha
