my friend has diabetes type 1 and its controlled by insulin, I want to be able to help her and be more understanding to what she can and cant do , and worse case what to do if it all goes wrong , please advise

First things first, her diabetes will NOT stop her from doing anything. She will need to take injections of insulin to control her blood sugars. The amount of insulin she needs will depend on a number of factors - one of the most important being the number of carbs that she eats.

She will have to test her blood sugar regularly. 4-8 is generally considered good for a type 1 diabetic. Lower than 4 is a hypo - she will need some sugar. If they are too high then she will probably need to take some insulin.

As a friend, you should know what to do if her sugars are too low. Some people get confused when they are hypo. Ask your friend what symptoms she experiences (we are all different) and learn to recognise them.

I am 70 and live alone in India for 6 months and other 6 months in London. Please follow the Doctors' advice to T; said that control temptation to eat what you have been told to avoid eating; Once in week (without binging :) ) eat what pleases you; for remaining 6 days focus on "controled" food items; Drink water regularly through out the day; Physical exercise (walk atleast 4 hours/week (spread over 4 days) and atleast 20 hours/month) with foot friendly shoes (with physiotherapy recommended soles) with clean socks. Intake of supplement such as protien (there are diabetic specific protien available OTC). Don't be couch potato (except to watch your favourite TV serial or to read a favourite author or a wonderful movie released). The neck and the back needs exercise, too; I go for a walk early in the morning for 10 rounds in the ground, daily ( a shot of one-hour walk) and each round I stop and bend forward (gradually), crane my neck sideways and upwards 5 times. And, this has helped me to maintain weight and energy well. This routine is little boring, hence, I listen to music (bluetooth) on my mobile. And, don't be worried, you are normal (so what, if you have diabetes, others have other ailments- which are equally good as daibetes); Look, like Indian say : :Chaand mey bhi daag hai" meaning the moon too has bad looking spots.
